What a tour operator does, the six that lead our rankings, what a trip costs and how your money is protected.

Tour operators at a glance
A luxury tour operator plans and books a whole trip under one contract: the hotels or camps, the guides, the transfers and often the flights. It holds the financial protection for your money and deals with what goes wrong. Wild Frontiers leads our 2026 rankings, ahead of Steppes Travel and Abercrombie & Kent, but the right operator depends on the trip.
This page gives the short answer to each question that comes up before booking, with a link to the full page behind it. Operators are scored on their own review pages and ranked on the Luxury Tour Operator Power Rankings.

The 2026 Power Rankings
Six operators are named in the 2026 Luxury Tour Operator Power Rankings, in this order: Wild Frontiers, Steppes Travel, Abercrombie & Kent, Extraordinary Journeys and Kuoni in joint fourth, and Cazenove+Loyd. Each is scored on what a buyer can check before paying: named specialists, cover on the ground, published prices, independent reviews and financial protection.
The scores, and the line of evidence behind every point, are on the rankings page and on each review.

Choosing
Common questions
A luxury tour operator plans and books a whole trip under one contract: the hotels or camps, the guides, the transfers and often the flights. It holds the financial protection for the money you pay and deals with what goes wrong on the trip. That is the difference from booking each hotel yourself, where each booking has its own terms.
Wild Frontiers leads the 2026 Luxury Tour Operator Power Rankings, followed by Steppes Travel, Abercrombie & Kent, Extraordinary Journeys and Kuoni in joint fourth, and Cazenove+Loyd. The best choice depends on the trip: Wild Frontiers and Steppes Travel for less-visited places, Abercrombie & Kent and Extraordinary Journeys for tailor-made safaris, Kuoni for flight-inclusive beach and city holidays, and Cazenove+Loyd for private itineraries priced before the first call.
Among the six ranked operators, as each published its prices in late September 2026: Wild Frontiers prices 16 trips from £1,640 to £7,670 per person; Steppes Travel from £3,695 to £24,238, before international flights; Abercrombie & Kent from USD 10,195 per person on dated departures; Extraordinary Journeys from about USD 1,000 per person per day with a five-day minimum; Kuoni from £1,579 to £8,395; and Cazenove+Loyd from £3,250 to £31,000.
In the UK, look for a numbered ATOL licence for trips sold with flights, plus ABTA or ABTOT cover. In the United States, USTOA membership carries a bond. In Canada, look for provincial registration such as TICO in Ontario. Ask for the number in writing and check it with the scheme before you pay a deposit.
For a trip with several hotels, camps or countries, usually yes: the operator books the pieces under one contract, holds the financial protection and deals with what goes wrong. For a single hotel or lodge, less often. Before paying, check that the operator publishes its prices, a number you can ring at any hour and a protection number.
Each operator has a review page with a score out of 100, set only from evidence a buyer can check before paying: named specialists, cover on the ground, published prices, independent reviews and financial protection. The six highest are named in the Power Rankings. Twenty more are assessed on the same evidence and named without a rank. A score changes when the evidence changes, and none can be bought.
