Expeditions · Tour operator records 2026
By Richard J. · written from ValenciaRecord score 48/100Verified 25 September 2026
APT scores 48/100 as a company record: the Australian touring and river cruise company the McGeary family has owned since Bill McGeary bought his first bus in 1927 puts its own tour directors on every trip and holds 4.5 out of 5 from 2,885 Trustpilot reviews, but publishes no price and no financial protection for Australian buyers. This record covers APT Luxury Travel, the flagship of APT Travel Group, on the same rubric as every other operator: owner, prices, terms, protection by market, support, reviews and the gaps.

Is this your company? Correct a fact. APT can correct any line of this record through the contact page. Corrections are logged with the previous value kept, and the score moves only if the evidence does.
APT scores 48 out of 100: strong on reviews and on its own people on the trip, and nothing for pricing or home-market protection, because it publishes neither. Its Power Rankings score of 71 was set on an older rubric that included brand authority; the rankings will be recalculated from these records.
| Criterion | Points | Out of | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planning depth | 17 | 25 | No planner is named; the site offers "Travel Experts" by phone (2 of 8). Founder Bill McGeary and the McGeary family named, no destination experience stated (2 of 4). 30 countries with their own pages (5 of 5). Tour pages run day by day and name the ship or lodge, such as Seabourn Pursuit on the Kimberley coast (5 of 5). Trading since 1927 (3 of 3). |
| On-the-ground cover | 13 | 20 | "24/7 emergency support" is claimed with no number beside it, and the phone lines keep office hours (3 of 7). APT runs its own wilderness lodges in the Kimberley; no offices abroad (5 of 8). APT driver-guides, tour directors and cruise directors travel with its trips (5 of 5). |
| Pricing transparency | 0 | 20 | No price on any tour page read in Australia, the UK or the US, nor on the last-minute deals pages; every tour asks for a quote, so there is no price to state inclusions, currency or dates against (0 of 17). The booking conditions sit in regional documents our reader could not open, so that line is n/r and the criterion is rescaled from 0 of 17 to 0 of 20. |
| Review evidence | 18 | 20 | Trustpilot 4.5 from 2,885 reviews on its global profile (12 of 12). ProductReview.com.au 2.0 from 124 (2 of 4). Newest Trustpilot review about 20 September 2026 (4 of 4). |
| Financial protection | 0 | 15 | The rubric scores the home market: nothing is published for buyers in Australia, where there is no national travel compensation fund to join (0 of 15). On other markets' lines APT would score 6 of 15 for UK buyers, where ABTA membership and ATOL bonding are claimed without numbers, and 15 of 15 for US buyers, as a USTOA member since 2025. |
| Total | 48 | 100 | Company record score, 25 September 2026. |
APT's score is split down the middle. What happens on the trip is well documented: its own directors and driver-guides, its own lodges, named ships and a large, positive review base. What a buyer checks before paying is not: no price on any tour, booking conditions that do not open, and no protection statement for the Australians who make up its home market.

The record holds 20 facts about APT, each with its source and grade. Grade A means the company's own site or terms; grade B means a registry, review platform, awarding body or major press; grade C means a secondary source not confirmed elsewhere. Every line was read on 25 September 2026 unless its source says otherwise.

APT is owned by the McGeary family of Melbourne, who describe it as "100 percent Australian family owned", and run by chief executive David Cox.
Bill McGeary bought his first bus in 1927, according to APT's own history. His son Geoff McGeary led the group for six decades and handed leadership to his children Robert McGeary and Lou Tandy in January 2024. Travel Weekly Australia reported in January 2026 that Robert McGeary had retired from the board after Geoff McGeary's death in 2025, and that Lou Tandy continues to represent the family, with Simon Jones as chair and David Cox, chief executive since July 2020, running the business.
APT Travel Group's brands are APT Luxury Travel, Travelmarvel, Botanica World Discoveries and Captain's Choice. APT's own history page still lists AAT Kings, but AAT Kings presents itself as part of The Travel Corporation, and neither the USTOA announcement nor the B Corp listing names it.
APT publishes no prices: every tour page read on its Australian, UK and US sites, and its last-minute deals pages, asks for a quote instead. The trips below show what the pages do publish.
| Trip | Length | What the page says is included |
|---|---|---|
| Kimberley Complete | 15 days, four-wheel drive | All meals, APT wilderness lodges, a driver-guide, a helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls, park fees; at most 22 guests |
| Kimberley Coastal Expedition | 10 days, Broome to Darwin | Nine nights on Seabourn Pursuit, daily Zodiac trips, drinks, an APT cruise director and expedition team |
| Magnificent Europe | 15 days, Budapest to Amsterdam | 14 nights on board, 41 meals, drinks, sightseeing, transfers, gratuities, a cruise director |
| Douro Delights with Madrid and Lisbon | 14 days | Seven nights on MS Estrela, 28 meals, drinks, tour and cruise directors, transfers, gratuities |
A buyer can see what a trip includes but not what it costs until a travel agent or APT quotes it. For comparison, Lindblad Expeditions prints a fare on every river and ocean voyage, from USD 6,200 for eight days on the Rhine.
APT's booking conditions sit in regional documents that did not open for this record, and the protection it publishes depends on where the buyer lives: nothing in Australia, ABTA and ATOL claims without numbers in the UK, and USTOA membership in the US.
The UK protection page says APT is a member of ABTA, that air-inclusive packages are "fully bonded" under ATOL and that client money is kept in a separate bank account, but prints no ATOL or ABTA number, and the UK terms page names the contracting company without one. USTOA announced APT Travel Group as an active member in May 2025, which brings its bond for US buyers. The Australian site sells a "Deposit Cancellation Peace of Mind" waiver for AUD 145 per person that allows cancellation up to 100 days before departure; that is an optional product, not protection. Australia has had no national travel compensation fund since 2014, so there is no scheme number to print, but APT does not describe a trust account or insurance for Australian bookings either.
APT puts its own people on its trips: driver-guides on its four-wheel-drive tours, and tour and cruise directors on its river and expedition cruises.
In the Kimberley it runs its own wilderness lodges, and the Kimberley Complete tour takes at most 22 guests. APT claims "24/7 emergency support" but gives no number for it; its Australian line opens weekdays 8am to 6pm and Saturday mornings, and its UK line weekdays and Saturdays. What an expedition day involves is in what to expect on an expedition cruise.
APT holds 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 2,885 reviews on its global profile, but Australian review sites score it far lower.
Its Australian Trustpilot profile shows 2.8 from five reviews, ProductReview.com.au 2.0 from 124, and Cruise Critic 3.1 from 11. The newest reviews on the global and ProductReview profiles were written in September 2026. APT has been a certified B Corporation since April 2026, with a score of 87.2.
APT suits travellers who want an escorted, largely inclusive river cruise or Outback tour with a director on board and are happy to get the price from a travel agent.
It suits less well anyone who wants to compare prices online, a UK buyer who wants an ATOL number before paying, or a traveller after a private itinerary. For small-group trips with published prices, see Wild Frontiers or Abercrombie & Kent, and for choosing between a group and a private trip, small-group expedition or private trip.
An APT quote covers the cruise or tour; the traveller still decides how to pay, which flights to take, where to stay either side and what to claim if a flight fails.
| Decision | What matters for an APT trip | Where we cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Paying | With no Australian scheme and no UK numbers printed, the card is the main protection: UK buyers get Section 75 on purchases priced £100 to £30,000. | Best luxury travel credit cards; UK and Europe travel cards |
| Flights to Europe | From Australia, the flight to Budapest or Porto is the longest part of the trip. | Best business class airlines; best first class airlines |
| Airport time | Long connections through Asia or the Gulf are where a lounge earns its cost. | Credit cards with airport lounge access |
| A delayed flight | Flights from EU airports carry fixed compensation of up to €600 for long delays, whatever the passenger's nationality. | AirHelp vs ClaimCompass vs Skycop vs Flightright |
| Rail add-ons | APT sells the Rocky Mountaineer and Belmond Andean Explorer inside some tours. | Best luxury train journeys; Rocky Mountaineer routes |
| Nights either side | Pre-cruise nights in Budapest, Amsterdam or Lisbon are city stays in their own right. | Best city break destinations; Hilton Diamond vs Marriott Titanium vs Hyatt Globalist |
APT appears on one other Uncompromised Travel page, the Power Rankings, where it ranks ninth of 12.
| Page | Position | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury tour operator Power Rankings 2026 | No. 9, 71/100 (older rubric) | Listed for European river cruises and Australian touring; to be recalculated |
| Best luxury travel companies 2026 | Not listed | Not among the featured companies |
The closest alternatives with company records are Lindblad Expeditions, which prints fares on its river and ocean voyages, Abercrombie & Kent for escorted small groups, and Kuoni for UK packages with prices and a 24-hour number.
| Company | Record score | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Abercrombie & Kent | 86 | Small groups with resident tour directors; dated prices; ATOL, ABTA, USTOA |
| Lindblad Expeditions | 84 | River and ocean voyages with fares published; USTOA member |
| Kuoni | 84 | UK packages and tours with prices; 24-hour duty number |
| Cox & Kings | 64 | Small-group tours priced in dollars |
Six things a buyer would want could not be found or verified for APT. Supplying a verifiable source closes a gap; it changes the evidence, never the rubric.
| Missing | Where we looked |
|---|---|
| Any price | Tour, deals and destination pages in Australia, the UK and the US |
| Deposit, balance date and cancellation scale | Regional booking conditions, which did not open |
| ATOL and ABTA numbers | UK protection, terms and contact pages; ABTA's member search |
| Protection for Australian buyers | Australian terms, contact and book with confidence pages |
| A 24-hour number | Contact pages and FAQs in Australia and the UK |
| An Australian head office address | Contact pages and footer; the business register gives only the postcode |
