Travel Intelligence · Company records 2026
By Richard J. · written from ValenciaAssessed, not scoredVerified 25 September 2026
Virtuoso is a Fort Worth network of independently owned luxury travel agencies, not a company that sells trips: virtuoso.com shows no prices, books nothing and sends every enquiry to an advisor at a member agency, whose terms and financial protection then apply. That is why this record assesses Virtuoso line by line on the tour operator rubric but gives it no score. It covers who owns and runs the network, what its hotel and cruise perks include, how many advisors it has, its reviews and the gaps.

Is this your company? Correct a fact. Virtuoso can correct any line of this record through the contact page. Corrections are logged with the previous value kept, and the record changes only if the evidence does.
Virtuoso is assessed but not scored because the traveller never books with Virtuoso: the booking, the payment and the protection belong to the member agency. A score would describe a company whose terms the traveller does not sign. Each member agency can be assessed on its own; one, The Luxury Travel Agency, has its own record.
| Criterion | What the record shows |
|---|---|
| Planning depth | The planners are the member agencies' advisors, not Virtuoso staff: its About page claims "more than 20,000 advisors" and its traveller benefits page "9,000". Advisor profiles are blocked to automated readers. No country pages or sample itineraries are published. Matthew Upchurch has been with the organisation since 1986 and chief executive since 2001. |
| On-the-ground cover | No 24-hour number; in-trip help comes from the traveller's own agency. Virtuoso Voyages cruise departures can carry an onboard host. |
| Pricing transparency | No prices anywhere on virtuoso.com, including its tours and Voyages pages. Its terms of service are blocked to automated readers; deposits and cancellation terms are set by each member agency. |
| Review evidence | Trustpilot 2.7 from 21 reviews on an unclaimed profile, newest 1 July 2026; Better Business Bureau rating B minus, not accredited. Travellers review their advisor, not the network. |
| Financial protection | None stated for Virtuoso itself. Protection is the member agency's: ATOL or ABTA for a UK agency, a seller of travel registration for a US one, TICO for an Ontario one. |
Virtuoso's value to a traveller sits in two places the rubric does not measure directly: the negotiating weight of its network with hotels and cruise lines, and the advisor it introduces. Both depend on which member agency the traveller ends up with, which is why the agency, not the network, is what to check before paying.

The record holds 17 facts about Virtuoso, each with its source and grade. Grade A means the company's own site or terms; grade B means a registry, review platform, awarding body or major press; grade C means a secondary source not confirmed elsewhere. Every line was read on 25 September 2026 unless its source says otherwise.

A traveller finds an advisor through Virtuoso, then books and pays that advisor's agency, which is independently owned and sets its own fees, deposits and cancellation terms.
Virtuoso calls itself "a network of the world's finest travel agencies" with advisors "who draw upon first-hand experience". Its advisor search matches travellers to member agencies; its tours and cruise pages carry no prices and send the reader to an advisor. The hotels, cruise lines and tour operators that deliver the trip are its "preferred partners", which Virtuoso says number more than 2,200. For how this compares with booking a hotel yourself or through a card programme, see Direct vs Amex FHR vs Virtuoso.
Booked through a Virtuoso advisor, partner hotels generally give preferred rates, an upgrade on arrival if one is free, daily breakfast for two, a Virtuoso-only amenity such as a spa credit, and early check-in or late checkout.
Virtuoso says the benefits "vary by property and experience", and its traveller benefits page gives no value for the amenity. On cruises, Virtuoso Voyages adds hosted departures and extras on selected sailings, only when booked through a member agency. The same kind of perks come with hotel elite status and card programmes; Hilton Diamond vs Marriott Titanium vs Hyatt Globalist and which elite benefits hotels actually deliver set them side by side, and Booking.com vs direct covers the rate question.
Virtuoso is a privately held company run by chairman and chief executive Matthew Upchurch, who became managing principal of its predecessor, Allied Percival International, in 1986 and chief executive in 2001.
According to Travel Weekly, 16 agencies formed a New York buying cooperative in 1951; Jesse Upchurch's Percival Tours bought it in 1986, and it was renamed Virtuoso in 2000, with Matthew Upchurch chief executive from 2001. In April 2026 Brad Bourland became president and Tristan Dowell, from Hyatt, chief commercial officer. No shareholder or parent company is published; Crunchbase lists it as private.
Virtuoso's own pages disagree on its size: the About page says more than 20,000 advisors and more than 2,200 partner companies, while the traveller benefits page says 9,000 advisors in more than 26 countries.
Its Travel Week in Las Vegas in August 2026 drew attendees from 105 countries and, Luxury Travel Report said, projected network sales up 20.8% on the year, with hotel bookings up 24.5% and cruise up 22.4%. At its Seoul symposium in April, PAX News reported, 70% of member agencies said Middle East conflict had forced them to reroute client itineraries.
Virtuoso has few reviews of its own: 21 on an unclaimed Trustpilot profile, averaging 2.7, and a B minus from the Better Business Bureau, which does not accredit it.
Travellers review the advisor or agency they booked with, not the network, so these figures say little about the experience of booking through a member. The BBB file lists a Seattle address that does not match the Seattle-area office on Virtuoso's own contact page, and a start date of 2006.
Virtuoso suits travellers who want a personal advisor and partner-hotel perks, and who will check the advisor's own agency, fees and financial protection before paying.
It suits less well someone who wants to compare prices online or book without a conversation: nothing on virtuoso.com can be bought. For a company that plans and sells the trip itself, the Power Rankings and the company records, such as Steppes Travel and Abercrombie & Kent, are the starting point; for advisor-led safari planning, safari specialist or booking direct.
Before paying a Virtuoso member, check the agency's own name, its fees, its deposit and cancellation terms and its protection number, then decide how to pay.
| Decision | What matters | Where we cover it |
|---|---|---|
| The agency | The contract is with the member agency; ask for its registered name and protection number, such as ATOL, TICO or a seller of travel registration. | The Luxury Travel Agency, a member, assessed |
| Paying | The card used decides the purchase and travel cover; UK cards add Section 75 on purchases priced £100 to £30,000. | Best luxury travel credit cards; Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve |
| The hotel | Virtuoso perks overlap with elite status and card hotel programmes. | Direct vs Amex FHR vs Virtuoso; luxury hotel brand hierarchy |
| Flights | Advisors book flights too; the cabin choice is the traveller's. | Best business class airlines; best first class airlines |
| Airport time | Lounge access comes with a card or ticket. | Credit cards with airport lounge access |
| A delayed flight | Flights from EU and UK airports carry fixed compensation of up to €600 or £520. | AirHelp vs ClaimCompass vs Skycop vs Flightright |
Virtuoso appears on two other Uncompromised Travel pages and is scored on neither.

The alternatives to Virtuoso are other ways to reach an advisor or a trip: Zicasso matches travellers with two specialist companies, The Luxury Travel Agency is one of Virtuoso's own members, and card hotel programmes offer similar perks.
| Company | Record score | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Zicasso | Assessed, not scored | Matches a traveller with two specialists; free to the traveller |
| The Luxury Travel Agency | Assessed, not scored | A Virtuoso member in Toronto and Nashville |
| Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts | Compared separately | Card-based hotel perks, booked online |
| Steppes Travel | 87 | A tour operator that plans and sells the trip itself |
Five things a buyer would want could not be found or verified for Virtuoso. Supplying a verifiable source closes a gap; it changes the evidence, never the rubric.

Virtuoso is a network of independently owned luxury travel agencies and their advisors, based in Fort Worth, Texas, with more than 2,200 partner hotels, cruise lines and tour operators. Its website does not sell trips; it connects travellers with advisors at member agencies.
You pay the member agency your advisor works for. That agency sets its own fees, deposits and cancellation terms, and its financial protection, such as ATOL, TICO or a seller of travel registration, is the one that applies.
Virtuoso is privately held and publishes no shareholders. Matthew Upchurch, chairman and chief executive, has been with the organisation since 1986 and chief executive since 2001, and Brad Bourland has been president since April 2026.
At partner hotels Virtuoso travellers generally get preferred rates, an upgrade on arrival if available, daily breakfast for two, a Virtuoso-only amenity such as a spa credit, and early check-in or late checkout. Virtuoso says the benefits vary by property.
Virtuoso's own pages disagree: its About page says more than 20,000 advisors, while its traveller benefits page says 9,000 in more than 26 countries.
Not in the usual sense. Virtuoso is the network; the travel agencies are its independently owned members, and the booking is made with one of them.
Virtuoso Voyages is a programme of hosted cruise departures with added benefits on selected sailings, running since 1990 and available only to travellers who book through a Virtuoso-affiliated agency.
Records score the company whose booking terms govern the traveller's money. With Virtuoso that is the member agency, so Virtuoso is assessed on the same five criteria without a total.
Virtuoso's headquarters are at 777 Main Street, Suite 900, Fort Worth, Texas, with further offices in Renton, Washington, New York, Mosman in Australia, Shanghai and Mexico City.
