Piper & Heath Travel Review 2026: Is It Worth It, What It Costs, and Who Owns It

Piper & Heath Travel, the San Diego safari company founded by Namibian-born Chris Liebenberg, scores 45/100 on our six-criterion operator review: full marks for destination breadth, 19 of 25 for first-hand African expertise, and nothing for reviews or pricing. It has pages for 16 African countries, publishes 18 sample journeys, promises "a dedicated team member available 24/7" once guests are in Africa, and says it gives 1% of gross sales to conservation and communities. What holds it back is what a buyer can check without calling: no price on any journey, no review platform that could be read, an owner and state registration that could not be confirmed, and two pages that describe its money protection differently.

Is Piper & Heath worth it?

Piper & Heath scores 45/100: it is a founder-led US company with deep Namibian roots and a wide range, and it publishes no prices and no readable reviews, the two gaps that cost it most here. Liebenberg told SD Voyager that he began his career "in grassroots conservation, including the protection of large wildlife like rhino and elephant", and Men's Journal described him in 2019 as a safari expert "born and raised in Namibia". Its Piper & Heath page says its home office is in San Diego and that guests in Africa are entrusted to "our reliable ground operators", with "a dedicated team member available 24/7". It says it gives "1% of our gross sales" to conservation and community work and that the total raised passed $1,400,000 in June 2026, a figure its commitment page says was "independently verified" without naming by whom. The score reflects what Piper & Heath publishes and what could be checked, not the quality of its trips.

How much does a Piper & Heath safari cost?

Piper & Heath publishes no prices: none of its 18 sample journeys, or the other pages checked, shows a per-person price, a from-price or a nightly rate. Its FAQ says "The cost of a safari can vary widely as it depends on an infinite number of factors", and answers "How much does Piper & Heath charge for their services?" with "booking through us never costs more than what you would spend trying to book directly with the camps." What its journey pages do publish is the shape of a trip: nights, camps, seasons and, on some, what is included.

Who plans Piper & Heath trips?

Piper & Heath names seven people, all on its guides page: founder and CEO Chris Liebenberg and six guides and photographers who work with its guests in Africa. Its Piper & Heath page says "We invest whatever time is necessary to understand your dream safari, and will work tirelessly until the itinerary is perfect." It names no other office staff, gives no team size and does not promise one specialist from enquiry to return; one of the six guides is described as freelance.

What do Piper & Heath reviews say?

No third-party review of Piper & Heath could be read for this record, so it scores 0 of 20 for review evidence. Its homepage links to its reviews on Facebook, Yelp and Google; Facebook and Yelp block automated checks, and the Google link opens a search page rather than a readable profile. It has no Trustpilot page, and no SafariBookings or Travelstride listing was found. Its testimonials page shows more than 50 reviews, the newest marked "2 weeks ago", without saying where they were posted; one client writes that "the best decision we made regarding our Africa trip was deciding to use P&H". Piper & Heath's awards and press

Piper & Heath's media page lists Chris Liebenberg as a Condé Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist in 2025 and 2026, "for the fifth consecutive year", on Travel + Leisure's Travel Advisor A-List "for the 12th consecutive year", and the company at No. 6 among Travel + Leisure's World's Best Safari Outfitters 2025; neither magazine's site could be opened for this record. Five press items were confirmed at source: two Men's Journal features on Namibia by Ian Centrone, both dated 13 August 2019, which call Liebenberg a safari expert "born and raised in Namibia"; a Travel Weekly article quoting him as "a Safari Pros member"; the SD Voyager interview; and The Herald in Zimbabwe, which on 9 March 2025 named Piper and Heath Travel among the partners of the Pathways Women's Empowerment and Girl Child Support Network in Victoria Falls. Its media page also lists Penta and The Guardian items that could not be opened.

Where Piper & Heath goes, and its safari styles

Piper & Heath has pages for 16 African countries, among them Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, and publishes 18 sample journeys, nine of them in Botswana. The journeys lean towards travel on foot and by water: walking at Lewa in Kenya, in Zimbabwe's Hwange and at Pafuri in South Africa; canoe trails on the Selinda Spillway and at Ruwesi in Zimbabwe; a cultural safari in Ethiopia's Omo Valley; and a nine-night Namibia desert circuit. Its sitemap shows 16 of the 18 journey pages last updated between 2017 and 2019; the newest, Pafuri Walking Trails, was updated in January 2024. Who owns Piper & Heath?

Piper & Heath's site names Chris Liebenberg as founder and CEO but does not say who owns Piper & Heath LLC, and California's business register could not be reached to check its members or managers. The company's name joins the surnames of his grandparents, Dennis Heath and Cornelia Pyper, who married in 1940, according to its history page, which traces his family at the Cape to 1688. The site gives no founding year; in the SD Voyager interview, which refers to 2017, Liebenberg said "I started Piper & Heath eight years ago", which puts the start at about 2009.

Piper & Heath's booking terms and financial protection

Piper & Heath's deposit is "generally 25%", non-refundable, on signing, and the balance is "generally due 90 days before date of departure"; cancelling more than 90 days ahead costs the deposit, and within 90 days the full cost. Its terms, last modified on 10 September 2026, name Piper & Heath LLC, require medical and evacuation insurance of at least $50,000 and $500,000, and send disputes to binding arbitration in San Diego under California law; no amendment fee is stated. On money protection, two of its pages read differently. Its FAQ says: "as fully-fledged members of the Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation, we deposit your funds into a Trust account from which we pay all the service providers". Its terms carry California's seller of travel notice, which says the restitution fund "does not cover non-California residents" and that "none of Piper & Heath's trips qualify". The Travel Consumer Restitution Corporation says the fund serves "consumers located in California". It gives its registration under California's seller of travel programme as CST 2102633-40; the Attorney General's seller search could not be reached to confirm it.
