Abercrombie & Kent did not so much join the luxury safari business as invent it. Founded in Kenya in 1962 by Geoffrey Kent and his parents, it built the first tented camps with hot showers, fine china and cold champagne, and coined "hunt with a camera, not a gun". Six decades on it is a global bespoke tour operator running some 350 journeys and expeditions across more than 100 countries. No one has been doing luxury safari longer, and no one matches A&K on global reach, logistics and full-service orchestration.
A&K is the original luxury safari house. The company was founded in Kenya in 1962 and, within five years, pitched the first genuinely luxurious tented camp — mobile refrigeration, indoor plumbing, hot showers, fine dining under canvas. That heritage has hardened into a formidable operating machine: more than 70 offices in over 80 countries and some 3,000 travel specialists, running Tailormade journeys, Small Group Journeys (capped at 18 guests), Expedition Cruises and Private Jet Journeys. On the ground it owns its own vehicles, employs its own driver-guides and holds its own airport lounges and reception teams — the reason A&K trips run smoothly where a self-booked itinerary can unravel.
Two things set it apart from a pure booking agent. First, it owns its own lodges and camps: the collection formerly branded Sanctuary Retreats, rebranded A&K Sanctuary in 2025, spans camps, lodges and riverboats from Botswana to the Nile — reviewed in full in our Sanctuary Retreats review. Second, conservation and community work is structural, not decorative: A&K Philanthropy, established in 1982, funds more than 70 projects across some 27 countries. Add the Marco Polo Club loyalty programme and A&K's "Inspiring Experiences" — private after-hours access, expert-led moments — and the pitch is a whole trip designed, owned and run end to end.
You pay a meaningful brand-and-service premium, and A&K is an operator, not an intimate owner-run camp brand.
The trade is cost and character. A&K's fully-orchestrated model carries a markup: much of what you sleep in on a safari — outside its own A&K Sanctuary properties — is third-party lodges A&K books on your behalf, so a determined traveller booking those same camps direct, or through a specialist, can sometimes pay less for a similar bed. If the single most important thing is the lowest price on a given lodge, A&K is rarely it.
It is also a large company rather than a boutique. Where a Singita or an andBeyond designs and runs a small collection of its own wilderness camps to one obsessive standard, A&K's strength is breadth and coordination across the whole trip. Its Small Group Journeys are excellent value for the service but, at up to 18 guests, are less private than a bespoke, guide-led camp stay. For pure lodge exclusivity and lowest guest densities, a dedicated lodge brand can deliver more per pound — A&K's edge is the itinerary around them.

Kenya is where A&K began, and it remains the operator's spiritual home. The classic route pairs the Masai Mara — big cats, the northern arc of the migration from roughly July to October — with Amboseli under Kilimanjaro and the private conservancies of Laikipia. A&K's own driver-guides and vehicles do the heavy lifting; several journeys stay at A&K Sanctuary's Kenyan camps, others at hand-picked partner lodges. Tanzania & the Great Migration

For the migration itself, A&K's strongest cards are its combined Kenya-and-Tanzania journeys, which chase the herds across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem and time the northern river crossings. Standalone Tanzania journeys pair the Serengeti with the wildlife-dense Ngorongoro Crater floor. As in Kenya, expect a blend of A&K Sanctuary camps and premium partner lodges, moved by A&K's own light-aircraft and vehicle logistics — the part that is genuinely hard to replicate booking direct.
Best for
Migration-led trips where the value is timing and cross-border logistics. The combined Kenya-and-Tanzania journeys, not a single-country stay, are where A&K's coordination pays off.
Botswana & the Okavango Delta

Botswana is A&K's premier water-safari destination, and here the operator's ownership matters most: A&K Sanctuary runs its own camps in the Okavango Delta — including Baines' (rebuilt and reopened in 2025) — so a good portion of a Botswana trip is spent in A&K-owned beds rather than booked-out third-party ones. The Ultimate Botswana Safari threads the Delta with Chobe's elephants and often bookends at Victoria Falls. Mokoro, boat and vehicle game-viewing depending on the flood.

Rwanda & the mountain gorillas

Rwanda is A&K's headline primate destination: gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, usually built as a Tailormade extension or combined with a Tanzania or Kenya safari leg rather than sold as a fixed group departure. The gorilla permit is a fixed, non-negotiable cost — currently US$1,500 per person per trek, set by the Rwanda Development Board — which is why Rwanda prices sit above a standard savannah safari. A once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trek, bolted onto an East African safari. Budget the US$1,500 permit on top of the daily rate — it is the same for every operator.
South Africa & the Cape

South Africa is A&K's most versatile African product because it pairs Big Five bush in the Greater Kruger private reserves with Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route — the easiest African trip to combine safari with a city and a coastline. Its Tailormade arm builds fully private, guide-led itineraries across any combination of countries — the format where the operator's own-team advantage and its address book of camps compound into something genuinely personal, typically from roughly US$1,200 to US$2,500+ per person per day depending on region, camps and season. And its Private Jet Journeys — small-group, capped at around 50 guests aboard a chartered jet, escorted by an A&K expedition team and resident doctor — string together a continent or the globe in one seamless multi-week loop. Private-jet pricing is quoted on application and runs well into six figures per person; A&K does not publish a standard fare, so treat any figure as indicative until confirmed.
