Timbuktu Travel, the tailor-made travel company Johnny Prince and Ian Petzer founded in 2014, with offices in Cape Town and Florida and a UK company in London, scores 81/100 on our six-criterion operator review, joint fifth of the thirteen operators reviewed: full marks for destination breadth and ownership transparency, and 16 of 20 for reviews. Feefo shows 4.9 out of 5 for service from 1,160 reviews, its country pages cover 20 African countries, and its co-founders are named on its site and on the register as its main shareholders. It loses most on pricing detail and service hours, and none of its three sets of booking terms names a financial protection scheme.

Is Timbuktu Travel worth it?

Timbuktu Travel scores 81/100: it has a large, current review base, an office in Africa and owners named on the register, and it is weakest where a buyer compares quotes: what its prices include, its hours and its money protection. Co-founder Johnny Prince studied in Cape Town and, before Timbuktu, founded a traditional travel agency and designed trips for over 500 guests across Africa; co-founder Ian was born and raised in Durban. Its team page names nine Africa travel specialists and operations staff who grew up in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Namibia. Feefo reviewers name specialists such as Kevin, who "worked with us to plan an adventure that not only met but exceeded expectations".

How the score works (100 points, the same six criteria on every operator review). First-hand African expertise 25: founders and specialists with stated time living, guiding or working in Africa, a base on the continent, years specialising · Independent review evidence 20: ratings and volume on platforms the company does not host, a second platform, and how recent the newest review is · Destination breadth 15: African countries with their own pages or itineraries · Pricing transparency 15: itineraries with a published per-person price, inclusions, currency and season · Service model and support hours 15: offices or phone lines in the UK or US, published hours, 24-hour in-trip support, one named specialist · Ownership transparency 10: owners named, legal entity and number published, and a registry check. Scores are ours; the inputs are linked and dated.

First-hand African expertise23/25Co-founder Johnny Prince studied in Cape Town and designed trips for over 500 guests across Africa before Timbuktu; co-founder Ian Petzer was raised in Durban; named staff grew up in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Namibia; an office in Cape Town; trading since 2014.
Independent review evidence16/20Feefo shows 4.9 out of 5 for service from 1,160 reviews, the newest within a day of the check; its Trustpilot page is claimed but has no reviews, so there is no second platform.
Destination breadth15/1520 African countries have their own pages, including Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, Lesotho and Eswatini, plus four island destinations.
Pricing transparency8/1517 Africa itineraries carry a 'from' price per person in US dollars, with nights; no inclusions, season or year could be read with them, because the trip pages returned no readable content to automated checks.
Service model and support hours9/15UK, US and South African phone lines, offices in Florida and Cape Town and '24/7 assistance wherever you are in the world'; no office hours, response time or one named specialist from enquiry to return is published.
Ownership transparency10/10Its site names co-founders Johnny Prince and Ian; Companies House records Jonathan Prince and Ian Petzer as each holding 25% to 50%; the privacy policy gives Timbuktu Travel Limited, 08459282, and the register's directors include both co-founders.

Where Timbuktu Travel stands on Uncompromised Travel

At 81/100, Timbuktu Travel is joint fifth of the 13 safari operators reviewed on these six criteria, level with Extraordinary Journeys and Abercrombie & Kent, three points above andBeyond and six below Expert Africa and Yellow Zebra Safaris. Our safari award credentials index already lists it second in Travel + Leisure's 2025 World's Best list of tour operators and safari outfitters, the highest-placed safari specialist on it. It has not been assessed on our safari planner index or payment terms index.

How much does a Timbuktu Travel safari cost?

Timbuktu Travel's country pages price 17 Africa itineraries from $4.9K per person, for nine nights taking in Cape Town, Kruger and Victoria Falls, to $13.1K for 11 nights of gorillas, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Prices are shown in thousands of US dollars, such as $13.1K, as "from" prices per person with the number of nights; the trip pages that would carry inclusions and dates returned no readable content to automated checks, so neither could be read. Its where-to-stay page adds nightly rates for 30 lodges and hotels. Our safari price per night decoder explains what a nightly rate usually covers.

What the public record does not show

Eight things a buyer might look for could not be found or did not match on 24 September 2026. Each is listed so it can be answered; if Timbuktu Travel publishes or corrects any of them, this record will change with a dated note.

  • A financial protection scheme for clients' money, named in its terms or on its site.
  • What its trip prices include, and the season or year they apply to: the trip pages returned no readable content to automated checks, and the country pages show "from" prices only.
  • Office hours and a response time.
  • One named specialist from enquiry to return, stated as a promise.
  • The CTO's full name on its own site: it gives "Ian"; the register gives Ian William Petzer.
  • The right UK company number in its global terms, which give 084592982.
  • Registration numbers or addresses for Timbuktu Travel Inc. and Timbuktu Travel SA PTY Limited in their terms.
  • Its membership of The Long Run, which it claims; the member pages The Long Run publishes did not list it.

How to price a comparable safari

The fair test of any quote from Timbuktu Travel is a like-for-like quote for the same camps, nights and season from a second specialist and a comparison platform. Ask each for the same lodges by name, the same room category and the same inclusions, then compare the per-person total with international flights excluded.
