Brown+Hudson asks for a retainer of up to £100,000 a year before a trip is designed, and publishes almost nothing a buyer could check before paying it: no trip price, no itinerary, no named planner and one review. What it does put in writing is an ATOL number and terms that make every payment non-refundable.

Who owns Brown+Hudson?

Brown+Hudson is owned and run by its founder, Philippe Brown, the sole director and the only person with significant control of Brown + Hudson Ltd, with 75% or more of the shares.

Brown left advertising, at Ogilvy in London and BDDP in Paris, after a trip in 1994, according to an interview on the company's site; his separate REVISIT profile says he then worked as "a researcher, fixer, interpreter, guide and expedition leader". The first company, Brown & Hudson Expeditions Limited, was incorporated in August 2007 and dissolved in 2016; the present one dates from May 2014. REVISIT, the consultancy Brown also fronts, is not mentioned on Brown+Hudson's own site.

How much does Brown+Hudson cost?

Brown+Hudson charges for access before any trip: annual retainers of £9,700, £45,000 or £100,000 plus VAT, or a planning fee that the terms put at a minimum of £1,500 and the FAQ at typically £1,000; trips are then priced on top, and no trip price is published.

ProductWhat it isPrice
ARIAAnnual retainer£9,700 plus VAT
VIVOAnnual retainer£45,000 plus VAT
NEROAnnual retainer£100,000 plus VAT
Retainer Fee, in the termsMinimum, non-refundable£1,500
Trip Planning Fee, in the FAQTypical, non-refundable£1,000
Itinerary Review ServiceA second opinion on your own itinerary, up to 10 days£997
Itinerary Review ServiceThe same, 11 to 20 days£1,997

The site says most clients using the review service "have been about to invest in excess of £70,000" on their travel. The terms add £100 per person for amendments and a management fee on the trip cost that varies with complexity. How other fee-based services compare is covered in the lifestyle concierge index.

Brown+Hudson booking terms and financial protection

Brown+Hudson takes 30% of the trip cost as a deposit and the balance three months before departure, treats every payment as non-refundable, and holds ATOL 11606, which covers only the trips it sells as packages.

The terms say the contract "will be either with Brown + Hudson or with another supplier"; where it acts as "the Booking Agent for the supplier", the contract is with the supplier and Brown+Hudson "accepts no responsibility for the suppliers' actions or omissions". On cancellation: "all payments are non-refundable". Payment is by bank transfer to Arbuthnot Latham. ATOL 11606 appears on the partners page, not in the terms; Protected Trust Services confirms it, with trust membership 5405. No ABTA or ABTOT number is published, and the terms carry no date.

Who plans a Brown+Hudson trip

Brown+Hudson names no planners besides its founder: it has no team page, and its careers page describes "a small team".

Its Inspiring People page names collaborators such as the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ben Fogle and the photographer Steve McCurry, who are not described as staff. Its concepts, such as The Great Game, Esoterica and Journey with No Destination, describe kinds of trip rather than itineraries.

Support on the ground

Brown+Hudson prints no 24-hour number and makes no 24/7 claim; its one published line, +44 203 358 0110, has no hours, and the only on-trip support described is "a team in London and our guides around the planet".

Whether those guides are its own staff is not stated, and no office or partner abroad is named.

What Brown+Hudson reviews say

Brown+Hudson has one independent review, a 3.2 on an unclaimed Trustpilot profile dated 2 January 2024, and its Travelstride profile has no ratings.

Its press page runs from 2009 to 2024 and includes Condé Nast Traveler's Top Travel Specialists in 2021 and Condé Nast Traveller's "Super Fixers" in December 2017, which were not checked at the magazines. Who reviews the reviewers explains how this site weighs reviews against press.

Who Brown+Hudson suits, and who it does not

Brown+Hudson suits travellers who spend heavily every year, want one founder-led service to design trips around them and are prepared to pay a retainer before any trip is priced.

It suits less well anyone who wants to see a price, an itinerary or a review before committing money, or who wants refundable payments. For what private guiding and security involve at this level, see private guides worth booking and personal security for high-net-worth travellers.
