The Best First Class Airlines in 2026: The Survivors

Travel Intelligence·Global·Updated 1 July 2026·By Richard J.

Singapore Airlines Suites is the best first class in 2026, Emirates First has the widest network, and Etihad The Residence is in a class of one. But the bigger story is contraction: only ten to twelve airlines still operate true first class, capacity is falling about 3% a year, and the gap to the best business class has narrowed. Below is the honest ranking of the survivors — the seat, the route, and how to actually access each one.

The short answer

Best overall: Singapore Airlines Suites — largest seat, double-bed configuration for couples, The Private Room at Changi.

Best network & the shower: Emirates First on the A380 — 40-50% of the world's first class capacity and the onboard shower spa.

Most exclusive: Etihad The Residence — a two-room suite with a bedroom and en-suite shower, for two, approaching private-jet privacy.

Best value on points: ANA The Suite — 120,000-150,000 miles for a round-trip transpacific first class seat.

The honest 2026 ranking

Combining hardware, soft product, ground experience, route network, and redemption access, here is where the ten survivors land. The detail on each — the seat dimensions, the routes it flies, and the exact redemption strategy — follows below the table.

RankAirlineBest forDistinguishing feature
1Singapore Airlines SuitesBest overall product, especially for couplesLargest seat, double bed config, Dom Pérignon, The Private Room
2Emirates First (A380)Best route network, broadest US coverageOnboard shower spa, First Class Terminal, chauffeur transfers

9Swiss FirstEuropean-style refinementCigar lounge at ZRH, regional Swiss culinary themes
10British Airways FirstHeathrow connections (limited beyond that)Concorde Room access; heavy fuel surcharges on Avios redemptions

For cash bookings, Singapore Suites and Emirates First are the strongest all-round. On points, ANA The Suite is the best value per mile while Singapore Suites is the best absolute product a non-elite can reach. Etihad The Residence sits apart — the only commercial product that approaches private-jet space and privacy, at a price that approaches private-jet economics.

For two or three together, charter can match first class

First class one-way fares run $8,500-$25,000 per passenger. Put two or three of those side by side and a private charter on the same route lands in the same range — with door-to-door time savings of 4-8 hours and a ground experience no commercial cabin matches. Worth a quote before you book three first class seats.

Who still operates first class in 2026

The list of genuine fleet-wide first class operators in 2026 is short: Air France, ANA, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss. Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and Qatar operate it on a few routes only or are transitioning away. Several majors dropped first class entirely over the past 15 years — Continental, US Airways, KLM, Iberia, Air New Zealand — because the cabin space earns more revenue per square foot reallocated to additional business class seats.

The remaining operators fall into three groups. The committed flagship operators — Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad, ANA — treat first class as core brand identity and keep investing in hardware and service. The European legacy operators — Air France, Lufthansa, Swiss, British Airways — run it fleet-wide on flagship routes but with fewer seats per aircraft and a narrower footprint, upgrading rather than expanding. The selective operators — Japan Airlines, Qantas — keep it as a niche product on specific aircraft and their longest or highest-yield routes only.

1. Singapore Airlines Suites

Status in 2026: the consensus pick for the best first class product in commercial aviation. Skytrax World's Best First Class 2025. Available on the Airbus A380 fleet only — six suites per aircraft in 1-1 configuration on the upper deck. Singapore operates approximately 12 A380s in 2026 (a reduced fleet from earlier years).

The hard product: 50 square feet per suite — the largest commercial first class space available. Each suite features a fully reclining swivel chair and a separate ottoman that converts to a 78-inch bed. The two centre suites can combine into a double bed for couples (100 square feet total). French doors and curved fully enclosed walls. 32-inch HD monitor. Lalique interior finishes. Dom Pérignon served as standard champagne.

Ground experience: The Private Room at Singapore Changi — a lounge within the SilverKris first class lounge accessible only to Suites passengers. À la carte fine dining with restaurant-grade service. Sleeping rooms with showers.

Routes: Singapore Suites operates on Singapore to New York (Newark and JFK), Los Angeles, San Francisco, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, Sydney, Mumbai, Delhi, and Hong Kong. The geographic constraint — every Suites flight either originates from or routes through Singapore — is the principal limitation.

The new product (delayed): Singapore Airlines' next-generation first class was scheduled for Q1 2027 entry into service on the A350-900 ULR fleet. In May 2026, Singapore confirmed the timeline has been pushed to an unspecified later date. The new product will feature French doors, curved fully enclosed walls, an ottoman for couple dining with a secondary seatbelt, and a four-suite layout (versus six on the current A380 Suites).

Redemption strategy: KrisFlyer transfers 1:1 from Amex MR, Chase UR, Citi ThankYou, and Capital One. Typical Suites award: 180,000-220,000 miles one-way long-haul, and Saver-level Suites space is reserved for KrisFlyer members only — partner programs cannot book it. At ~200,000 miles against a $12,000-$18,000 cash fare, the SIN-LHR or SIN-LAX Suites redemption is among the highest-value in the major points programs.

2. Emirates First Class

Status in 2026: the largest first class operator in the world by some distance, with approximately 40-50% of global commercial first class capacity (around 26,800 first class seats scheduled per week). Operates first class across the entire A380 fleet (approximately 100 aircraft) and on selected Boeing 777-300ERs.

The hard product (A380): 14 first class suites per A380 in 1-1-1 configuration on the upper deck. Sliding doors, fully enclosed suites. The Boeing 777-300ER first class features the newer six-suite configuration with floor-to-ceiling walls, virtual windows for middle seats, Mercedes-Benz-designed cabin finishes, and zero-gravity seating positions inspired by NASA technology.

The shower spa (A380 only): Emirates A380 first class includes the onboard shower spa — the single most distinguishing first class amenity in commercial aviation. Approximately 5 minutes of running water per passenger, heated floor, full towels and products. For overnight flights, the shower transforms the arrival experience.

Service: seven-course tasting menu, dine-on-demand at any time during the flight, free-flow champagne (Dom Pérignon on most routes), caviar service, Mouton Rothschild and Château d'Yquem wines on selected routes, Bvlgari amenity kits, individual fresh roses, mini-bar with soft drinks.

Ground experience: Emirates First Class Terminal at Dubai (Concourse A) — a separate facility with multiple restaurants, full bar, spa with complimentary treatments, sleeping rooms, and direct boarding to the aircraft via private boarding gates. Complimentary chauffeur transfers at most major cities (home or hotel to airport, or airport to home or hotel).

Routes: the broadest first class network in the world. US coverage includes JFK, LAX, ORD, DFW, IAH, MIA, SEA, BOS, EWR, IAD. European coverage includes London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Madrid, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Athens, Amsterdam. Comprehensive African, Asian, and Australian coverage.

Redemption strategy: Emirates Skywards transfers 1:1 from Amex MR and Capital One. Typical award: 95,000-150,000 miles one-way long-haul, plus moderate surcharges. Availability is structurally tight — Emirates releases first class space inconsistently and often restricts it to elites or the upgrade-from-business path. The Qantas Frequent Flyer partner route into Emirates first is sometimes more accessible than booking Skywards directly.

3. Etihad Apartments and The Residence

Status in 2026: the most exclusive commercial aviation product in history. The Residence — a two-room suite with a private bedroom, living room, and en-suite shower for two passengers — exists only on Etihad's A380 fleet. Etihad announced in February 2026 that a cabin refresh will begin in Q3 2026. Flights during the July-October 2026 retrofit window may use substitute aircraft without The Residence product.

The Residence (hard product): approximately 125 square feet of total space across the two rooms. The bedroom has a double bed; the living room has a sofa that converts to additional sleeping space if needed. En-suite shower with full toiletries and Armani amenity products. Dedicated butler service. Capacity for two passengers as a single booking — The Residence cannot be booked as a single seat.

The Apartments (hard product): nine first class suites per A380 in a 1-2-1 configuration with closing doors. Large recliner seat made of Poltrona Frau leather plus a bench that converts to a separate bed surface. Vanity area with mirrors. Devaux House champagne, ESPA amenity products, Armani pajamas and slippers. The Apartments are structurally larger than Singapore Suites — approximately 39 square feet per suite.

Ground experience: Etihad First Class Lounge & Spa at Abu Dhabi, with à la carte dining and spa treatments. Concierge handling, dedicated immigration flow.

Routes: The Residence and Apartments operate on Etihad A380 flights only — currently Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi to New York JFK. The route network is materially smaller than Emirates or Singapore.

Redemption strategy: Etihad Guest is a transfer partner from American Express Membership Rewards (1:1) and Capital One Miles. Apartments awards typically cost 90,000-150,000 Etihad miles one-way. The Residence is occasionally available for award redemption at 250,000-400,000 miles for two passengers (the only way to fly The Residence on points). The Residence cash fare is typically $20,000-$30,000 per passenger.

4. ANA The Suite

Status in 2026: the strongest Japanese first class product. Available on All Nippon Airways' Boeing 777-300ER fleet on selected long-haul routes. Eight suites per aircraft in 1-1-1 configuration with fully closing doors.

The hard product: 48 square feet per suite, fully enclosed with closing doors, 43-inch monitor, separate ottoman that converts to a lie-flat bed. The seat is made in conjunction with Nishikawa (the premium Japanese bedding manufacturer). The cabin design uses Japanese aesthetic elements throughout.

Service: ANA's first class dining is consistently rated among the best in commercial aviation, with kaiseki tasting menus and Japanese-Western dining options. The dining experience includes pre-flight ordering, individual chef plating, and refined attention across the flight.

Routes: ANA The Suite operates on Tokyo Haneda or Narita to New York (JFK and Newark), Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris.

Redemption strategy: ANA Mileage Club transfers 1:1 from Amex MR. The Suite is exceptionally good value — a round-trip transpacific from a US west coast city costs 120,000-150,000 ANA miles for round-trip first class (ANA charts are round-trip-based, not one-way), among the most generous first class rates in any program. Availability is typically good 6-11 months out.

5. Air France La Première

Status in 2026: the European first class benchmark. Air France's new La Première suite (the five-window suite design) is rolling out on the Boeing 777-300ER fleet through 2026-2027. The new product features a modular seat-and-chaise design that converts into a two-metre bed.

The hard product (new La Première): spans five windows — the longest first class suite by window count of any commercial product. Modular seat plus chaise configuration. Approximately 35 square feet per suite. Fully enclosed with closing partition. Upgraded technology and entertainment system.

Ground experience: the La Première Lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle is the strongest first class lounge in Europe. Dedicated entrance to the airport (passengers are escorted from the curb to the lounge), individual private suites, Alain Ducasse-curated dining at Le Comptoir, dedicated immigration handling, chauffeur transfer to the aircraft. The ground experience is widely regarded as the most refined first class ground product in the world.

Service: Alain Ducasse menus, Krug champagne, multiple-course tasting menus, individual chef plating, refined French service throughout.

Routes: Air France La Première operates on Paris CDG to New York (JFK), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, Shanghai. The new La Première product is rolling out on these routes through 2026-2027.

Redemption strategy: Flying Blue transfers 1:1 from Amex MR, Chase UR, Citi ThankYou, and Capital One — but La Première awards are restricted to Flying Blue Platinum elites only. That makes it one of the harder first class products to access on points; earning Platinum status is the primary path.

6. Japan Airlines First Class

Status in 2026: the new A350-1000 first class is the strongest current JAL first class product. JAL takes A350-1000 deliveries through 2026, with the new first class featuring a 1-1-1 configuration and a focus on personal space.

The hard product (new A350-1000): private suite with sliding doors, large in-flight entertainment screens, lie-flat bed surface. Refined Japanese aesthetic similar to ANA but with JAL's distinctive design language. The older 777-300ER first class without the new product is being phased out through 2026-2027.

Service: consistently excellent Japanese service, fine dining with Japanese-Western options, the JAL First Class Lounge at Haneda for ground experience.

Routes: JAL first class operates on Tokyo Haneda to New York JFK, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas; Tokyo to London Heathrow, Paris, Frankfurt.

Redemption strategy: JAL Mileage Bank does not partner widely with US flexible-currency programs. The cleanest first class redemption path is via partner programs: American Airlines AAdvantage (oneworld alliance) at 80,000 AA miles one-way to Asia (one of the strongest AA partner redemptions), British Airways Avios at 60,000-100,000 Avios for short distances, Iberia Avios at similar rates. American Airlines AAdvantage is the most accessible JAL first class redemption but requires phone booking.

7. Lufthansa Allegris First Class

Status in 2026: the Allegris cabin programme is rolling out across Lufthansa's fleet through 2025-2027, with reduced-capacity first class suites versus the legacy 8-seat first class cabin. The new Allegris first class features 3 or 4 suites per aircraft, with private cabins reaching the highest space allocation of any commercial first class on a per-passenger basis.

The hard product (Allegris): private suites with full enclosure, including a "Suite Plus" variant that effectively creates a private double room. The Allegris first class is significantly more spacious than the previous Lufthansa first class product.

Ground experience: the Lufthansa First Class Terminal at Frankfurt — a separate building, accessed via a chauffeured Porsche or Mercedes from the airline's curbside entrance. Whisky bar, restaurant, full showers, private bathrooms, dedicated immigration handling, chauffeur transfer to the aircraft. Widely regarded as the most refined first class ground experience in the world (alongside Air France La Première at CDG).

Routes: Lufthansa first class operates on Frankfurt and Munich to North American gateways (JFK, EWR, IAD, ORD, MIA, LAX, SFO, YYZ) plus Asian gateways (Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong).

Redemption strategy: Miles & More transfers 1:1 from Capital One and US Bank Altitude Reserve. Lufthansa generally releases first class space to partners only within 14-30 days of departure, so Aeroplan, LifeMiles, and United MileagePlus sometimes surface availability that direct Miles & More bookings do not.

8. Qantas First Class

Status in 2026: available on Qantas A380 fleet only — approximately 14 first class suites per aircraft in a 1-1-1 configuration. Qantas plans first class on its forthcoming A350-1000 fleet for Project Sunrise (direct Sydney/Melbourne to New York and London), though entry into service has been delayed multiple times.

The hard product (A380): spacious first class suites with separate ottoman seating, large in-flight entertainment displays, refined Australian-design cabin aesthetic.

Service: Neil Perry-curated dining (Qantas's longstanding chef partnership), Australian wine list, refined service quality. The Qantas First Lounge at Sydney and the International First Lounge at Los Angeles are excellent first class lounges.

Routes: A380 first class operates on Sydney and Melbourne to Los Angeles, London Heathrow, Singapore, Dallas, Auckland, plus selected other routes.

Redemption strategy: Qantas Frequent Flyer transfers 1:1 from Amex MR, Citi ThankYou, and Capital One Miles. Own-metal first class runs 120,000-180,000 points one-way long-haul. The structural advantage: QFF redemptions for Emirates first class are often more accessible than booking via Emirates Skywards directly.

9. Swiss First Class

Status in 2026: the elegant European first class with a strong soft product. Available on Swiss's Boeing 777-300ER fleet and the Airbus A340-300 fleet on selected routes.

The hard product: eight first class suites per 777-300ER in 1-2-1 configuration. Private cabin with closing partition, separate bed surface, refined cabin design.

Service: consistently strong, with regional Swiss culinary themes rotated quarterly and a Swiss wine list. The Swiss First Class Lounge at Zurich features a cigar lounge and full dining service.

Routes: Zurich to New York (JFK), Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Boston, San Francisco, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok.

Redemption strategy: via Miles & More — Swiss is part of the Lufthansa Group, so first class awards follow similar rules, with partner space typically released only within 14-30 days of departure. Aeroplan, LifeMiles, and United MileagePlus are the practical partner paths.

10. British Airways First

Status in 2026: the weakest first class product among the genuine fleet-wide operators. British Airways First on the 777-300ER, 787-9, and 787-10 fleet features lie-flat beds and direct aisle access but lacks the sliding door enclosures of competing first class products. The First cabin is meaningfully less differentiated from the Club Suite business class product than other airlines' first class versus business class differential.

The hard product: 1-2-1 layout on most aircraft, lie-flat beds, large screens. The structural issue is that BA First has fallen behind the global standard — it would be a strong business class, but lacks the space, dining depth, and ground experience of competing first class products.

Ground experience: the Concorde Room at Heathrow Terminal 5, with à la carte dining. Solid, but not in the class of the Air France or Lufthansa ground products.

Routes: Heathrow to New York (JFK, EWR), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Washington Dulles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and other long-haul destinations.

Redemption strategy: BA Executive Club Avios — typically 100,000-130,000 one-way transatlantic, plus heavy fuel surcharges ($700-$1,200 cash) that make it less attractive than other oneworld carriers. The cleaner approach is using Avios on partner first class (Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways), where surcharges are lower or absent.

The honest caveat

First class is contracting because business class has closed much of the gap — the best business suites now offer doors, direct aisle access, and lie-flat beds for a fraction of the fare. First class still wins on ground experience, space, and dining, but whether it pays back is route-dependent. The ten above are the ones worth the premium when it makes sense.

The infrastructure beyond first class

First class is the most refined commercial product, but for groups of two or three the per-passenger math shifts — a private charter on the same premium route is increasingly within range of three first class fares, saving 4-8 hours door-to-door. Our breakdown of private jet versus first class cost runs the numbers route by route.

For the commercial flight that remains, two trip-protection layers earn their place regardless of cabin. AirHelp recovers EU 261 and US DOT compensation on delayed and cancelled flights — typically $1,500-$3,500 across a moderate travel year, whether you flew first or economy. SafetyWing fills the catastrophic-medical gap no premium cabin or airline insurance covers on extended international trips.

And where the destination is the experience rather than the flight — staffed villa weeks and the like — Plum Guide's villa inventory serves the part of luxury travel that no commercial cabin does.

Frequently asked questions

Which airline has the best first class in 2026?

Singapore Airlines Suites is the consensus pick for the best overall first class product in 2026. Skytrax World's Best First Class 2025. The Suites deliver 50 square feet per passenger (the largest commercial first class space), a fully reclining swivel chair plus a separate 78-inch bed (the centre suites can combine into a double bed for couples), French doors with curved fully enclosed walls, Dom Pérignon as standard champagne, and access to The Private Room at Singapore Changi. The structural constraint is route concentration — every Suites flight either originates from or routes through Singapore. Emirates First on the A380 is the close runner-up, with the broadest first class route network in the world (40-50% of global first class capacity) and the distinguishing onboard shower spa.

How many airlines still offer first class in 2026?

Approximately 10-12 airlines operate genuine first class as a fleet-wide product in 2026: Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Etihad, ANA, Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and Swiss. Cathay Pacific, Korean Air, and Qatar Airways operate first class on a limited number of routes only. The list is shorter than five years ago: Continental, US Airways, KLM, Iberia, Air New Zealand, and several others eliminated first class entirely over the past 15 years. First class capacity worldwide is declining at approximately 3% per year. Korean Air's all-new first class is scheduled for 2028 entry into service. Singapore Airlines' next-generation first class was originally planned for Q1 2027 but was confirmed in May 2026 as delayed to an unspecified later date.

What is Etihad The Residence and how do you book it?

Etihad The Residence is a two-room suite on Etihad's A380 fleet — the most exclusive commercial aviation product ever offered. It includes a private bedroom with a double bed, a separate living room with a sofa, and an en-suite shower, all within approximately 125 square feet of total space. Dedicated butler service is included. Capacity is two passengers as a single booking. The Residence cannot be booked as a single seat. The cash fare is typically $20,000-$30,000 per passenger. Award redemption via Etihad Guest miles is occasionally possible at 250,000-400,000 miles for two passengers. The Residence operates on Etihad's A380 flights only — currently Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi to New York JFK. Etihad announced in February 2026 that a cabin refresh will begin in Q3 2026; flights during the July-October retrofit window may use substitute aircraft without The Residence product.

Which first class is the best redemption value for points and miles?

ANA The Suite delivers the best redemption value per mile in 2026. ANA Mileage Club is a transfer partner from American Express Membership Rewards (1:1). Typical round-trip transpacific in The Suite from a US west coast city costs 120,000-150,000 ANA miles — yes, round-trip, because ANA award charts are round-trip-based, not one-way. This is one of the most generous first class redemption rates in any major program. For travellers prepared to fly from Asia, Singapore Airlines Suites at 180,000-220,000 KrisFlyer miles one-way for long-haul (transferable from Amex MR, Chase UR, Citi TY, and Capital One at 1:1) delivers the strongest absolute first class product accessible to non-elite members. Air France La Première is restricted to Flying Blue Platinum elites only, making it one of the harder first class products to access via points.

Which airlines have onboard showers in first class in 2026?

Two airlines offer onboard showers in commercial first class: Emirates on the A380 fleet (approximately 100 aircraft, the largest A380 operator in the world) and Etihad on the A380 fleet. Emirates' shower spa allocates approximately 5 minutes of running water per passenger across the flight, with heated floors, full towels, and amenity products. Etihad's first class showers are available to both Apartment and Residence passengers on A380 routes. The shower is unavailable on Emirates' Boeing 777 first class or on any other commercial first class product worldwide. Adding showers requires dedicated cabin space and water tank capacity that smaller widebody aircraft cannot accommodate. The shower benefit is widely cited as the single most distinguishing feature of Emirates A380 first class versus competing first class products.

What is the difference between Air France La Première and Lufthansa First?

Both are the strongest European first class products with exceptional ground experiences. Air France La Première: the new five-window suite design rolling out on 777-300ERs through 2026-2027 features a modular seat-and-chaise design that converts to a two-metre bed. The La Première Lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle is widely regarded as the most refined first class lounge in the world, with passengers escorted from the curb to the lounge, Alain Ducasse-curated dining at Le Comptoir, individual private suites, and chauffeur transfer to the aircraft. Lufthansa First (Allegris programme): new private suites rolling out through 2025-2027 with significantly more space than the previous product. The Lufthansa First Class Terminal at Frankfurt is a separate building, accessed via a chauffeured Porsche or Mercedes from the airline's curbside entrance, with full showers, whisky bar, restaurant, and dedicated immigration handling. Both ground products are decisively better than business class lounges.

Booking three first class seats? Price a charter first

Two Singapore Suites at $15,000 each totals $30,000. Three Emirates First at $14,000 each totals $42,000. On the same routes, a private charter for a group of two to four lands in that range — with 4-8 hours of door-to-door time saved and a ground experience no commercial first class lounge matches.
