Expeditions · Tour operator records 2026
By Richard J. · written from ValenciaRecord score 84/100Verified 25 September 2026
Lindblad Expeditions scores 84/100 as a company record: the Nasdaq-listed expedition cruise company that Sven-Olof Lindblad has run since 1979 publishes a price on its voyages, from USD 6,000 for eight days in Alaska, names its naturalists, takes a 15% deposit and has been a USTOA member since 1992. This record covers the company behind the ships: who owns it, what a voyage costs, the booking and cancellation terms, support on board, reviews and the gaps. It does not rank Lindblad against other cruise lines; the cruise indexes linked below do that.

Lindblad Expeditions scores 84 out of 100: full marks for planning depth, pricing and financial protection, held back by no published 24-hour number and a thin review record for a company of its size. Its Power Rankings score of 83 was set on an older rubric that included brand authority; the rankings will be recalculated from these records.
| Criterion | Points | Out of | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planning depth | 25 | 25 | A published expedition team directory names naturalists with first-hand experience, such as a guide raised on San Cristóbal in the Galápagos and an expedition leader with more than 35 years in Antarctica (8 of 8). Lars-Eric Lindblad led the first tourist expedition to Antarctica in 1966, the company's origin (4 of 4). 48 countries and territories named across its destination pages and voyage titles (5 of 5). Voyage pages run day by day and name the ship, such as National Geographic Resolution on Japan's Western Shores (5 of 5). Led by Sven-Olof Lindblad since 1979 (3 of 3). |
| On-the-ground cover | 10 | 20 | No 24-hour number: none of the lines printed for the US, UK or Australia is labelled 24-hour, and the US line, 1-800-397-3348, keeps office hours (0 of 7). National Geographic Islander II "sails year-round in the Galápagos" with guides who are Galápagueños or from mainland Ecuador; no destination office is named (5 of 8). Its own expedition team sails on every voyage (5 of 5). |
| Pricing transparency | 20 | 20 | 11 voyages priced per person (8 of 8). Inclusions listed with the price (5 of 5). US dollars with months or seasons, such as May to September 2027 in Alaska (4 of 4). A 15% deposit, final payment 120 days out and a three-step cancellation scale (3 of 3). |
| Review evidence | 14 | 20 | Cruise Critic 4.4 from 256 reviews (8 of 12). Tripadvisor 3.2 from 65 (2 of 4). Newest Tripadvisor review 5 April 2026 (4 of 4). |
| Financial protection | 15 | 15 | Listed in USTOA's member directory since 1992, with California seller of travel 2151120 and Washington 601134845 (15 of 15). |
| Total | 84 | 100 | Company record score, 25 September 2026. |
Lindblad publishes what most cruise lines keep for the brochure: a price and months on every voyage page, the names and backgrounds of the people who guide ashore, and its full cancellation scale. Its gaps are the ones a buyer notices only when something goes wrong: no number labelled 24-hour, and review volumes far below what 37,993 guests a year would suggest.

The record holds 20 facts about Lindblad Expeditions, each with its source and grade. Grade A means the company's own site or terms; grade B means a registry, review platform, awarding body or major press; grade C means a secondary source not confirmed elsewhere. Every line was read on 25 September 2026 unless its source says otherwise.

Lindblad Expeditions is owned by Lindblad Expeditions Holdings, Inc., a company listed on Nasdaq as LIND since July 2015, and led since January 2025 by chief executive Natalya Leahy.
Sven-Olof Lindblad, who has run the business since 1979, became founder and co-chair when Leahy, previously president of Seabourn, took over, announced in December 2024. The group reported revenue of USD 771.0 million for 2025, up 20%, and raised its 2026 guidance in August.
Beyond its ships, Lindblad has bought land and adventure brands: Natural Habitat Adventures in 2016, Off the Beaten Path, DuVine and Classic Journeys in 2021, Thomson Safaris in April 2024 and, on 15 September 2026, 60% of White Desert Antarctica for about USD 61 million in cash, which its chief executive called the largest transaction in the company's history. White Desert's camps are covered in our Antarctica luxury camps guide.
Lindblad Expeditions voyages read for this record cost from USD 6,000 per person for eight days in Alaska to USD 22,715 for 21 days to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands, flights mostly extra. All prices were read on 25 September 2026 on Lindblad's own voyage pages and are starting prices per person.
| Voyage | Region | Days | From, per person |

| The Panama Canal, Pearl Islands and Darien Jungle | Panama, January, March, December | 8 | USD 6,150 |
| Rhine River: Castles, Culture and Culinary Delights | Rhine, June and September | 8 | USD 6,200 |
| Exploring Galápagos | Galápagos, all year | 10 | USD 6,370 |

| Svalbard: In Search of Iconic Arctic Wildlife | Svalbard, April to June | 10 | USD 14,900 |
| Japan's Western Shores | Japan, June | 16 | USD 20,500 |
| Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands | October to March | 21 to 22 | USD 22,715 |
Prices include meals on board, the expedition team and excursions by Zodiac or kayak; the Svalbard voyage includes a hotel night in Oslo. For how these fares compare with other lines, see the expedition cruise operator index, where Lindblad ranks first on published fares, and Lindblad vs Silversea vs Seabourn vs Scenic Eclipse.
Lindblad Expeditions takes an advance payment of 15% of the cabin fare, wants the rest 120 days before departure, and before that point charges no cancellation penalty, holding the advance payment as credit for a future voyage.
| When you cancel | What you pay |
|---|---|
| 120 days or more before departure | No penalty; the advance payment is credited towards the next expedition |
| 119 to 90 days | 50% of the trip cost |
| 89 days or less | 100% of the trip cost |
| Changing dates inside 120 days | Treated as a cancellation |
The cancellation policy has been in effect since 1 May 2023, while the reservation terms were updated on 30 March 2026 and the general terms on 13 July 2026, so a buyer should check all three. Trip cost includes extensions and charter flights. USTOA's directory lists Lindblad as a member since 1992, and the reservation terms print California seller of travel 2151120 and Washington 601134845 001 0001. No ATOL or ABTA number is published for UK buyers, who book through a UK freephone line. Our Antarctica operator index marked Lindblad down for unpublished terms; this record found them published.
Every Lindblad voyage carries its own expedition team of leaders, naturalists, undersea specialists and photo instructors, and the company publishes their names and backgrounds.
Benjamin Ayala was raised on San Cristóbal by a naturalist-guide mother and works as a Galápagos National Park guide; Gerard Baker has more than 35 years in Antarctica and more than 5,000 nights on the continent; Nicolás Guerrero has guided in Panama for 13 years. In the Galápagos, Lindblad says "all of your veteran guides are Galápagueños or from mainland Ecuador". What an expedition day involves is set out in what to expect on an expedition cruise.
Lindblad publishes no 24-hour number: its reservations line, 1-800-397-3348, opens 9am to 8pm Eastern on weekdays and 10am to 5pm at weekends.
On board, Lindblad says most of its ships carry a physician, with defibrillators and basic acute-care equipment. The health and safety page names eight vessels that sail without a doctor, among them The Jahan on the Mekong and Oberoi Philae on the Nile, and says they are typically within two hours of healthcare on land. Conditions beyond the ship's care mean evacuation, which Lindblad tells guests to insure.
Lindblad Expeditions holds 4.4 out of 5 on Cruise Critic from 256 reviews, its largest independent review base, and 3.2 on Tripadvisor from 65.
Its Trustpilot profile is unclaimed, with four reviews averaging 2.6, the newest from August 2025. The Better Business Bureau rates it F, recording six complaints, four of them unanswered. For a company that carried 37,993 guests in 2025, these are small samples; the guide to review platforms explains why cruise reviews gather on Cruise Critic rather than Trustpilot.
Lindblad Expeditions suits travellers who want naturalists and photographers leading every landing, published fares and a USTOA-listed company, on small ships to the polar regions, the Galápagos, Alaska and Baja.
It suits less well a UK buyer who wants ATOL or ABTA cover, which Lindblad does not publish, or a traveller who wants a hotel-standard cruise: ships carry 16 to 148 guests and the day is built around landings. Solo travellers should read the best cruise lines for solo travellers before booking a cabin, and Galápagos buyers cruise or land tour in the Galápagos.
Most Lindblad fares exclude flights, so the traveller still chooses how to pay, how to reach the ship, where to stay either side and what to claim if a flight fails.
| Decision | What matters for a Lindblad voyage | Where we cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Paying the advance payment | A 15% advance payment on a USD 22,715 Antarctic fare is about USD 3,400; the card used decides the purchase and travel cover that comes with it. | Best luxury travel credit cards; Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve |
| Reaching the ship | Antarctic voyages start in South America and Arctic ones in Oslo or Reykjavik; the long-haul seat is the traveller's choice. | Best business class airlines; best first class airlines |
| Airport time | Long connections through Miami, Santiago or Oslo are where a lounge pays for itself. | Credit cards with airport lounge access |
| A missed embarkation | A delayed flight from a UK or EU airport can carry fixed compensation of up to £520 or €600, but the ship will not wait. | AirHelp vs ClaimCompass vs Skycop vs Flightright |
| Nights either side | Pre-voyage nights in gateway cities such as Lima or Oslo are usually in chain hotels where status brings breakfast and late checkout. | Hilton Diamond vs Marriott Titanium vs Hyatt Globalist |
| Choosing the region | Wildlife seasons decide the month: whales in Baja from January, polar bears in Svalbard from April. | Best wildlife travel destinations; best Arctic expedition cruise lines |
