Why this matters more than in other travel

Book a hotel badly and you have a poor weekend. Book a safari badly and the exposure is different in three specific ways.

The money moves early and it is large. Deposits of 20–30% are standard nine to twelve months out, with the balance due 60–90 days before travel. You are often unsecured against a company in another jurisdiction for the better part of a year.

You cannot inspect what you bought. A camp two hours by light aircraft from the nearest town cannot be checked in advance. You are buying a description.

The setting is genuinely remote. This is why safari operators with exceptional safety records is one of the most-searched things about this industry. In a camp four hours from a paved road, the operator's emergency planning is not a compliance detail — it is the whole safety system.

Financial protection, explained

This is the single most valuable check and the one most travellers skip, because it is boring. It is also the only thing that returns your deposit if a company fails between booking and travel.

Verify on the scheme's register, never on the operator's own page. A logo in a website footer is a picture file. Membership numbers are searchable, and thirty seconds of checking is the highest-value half-minute in the whole booking process.

The safety questions nobody asks

Ask these five by email and keep the replies. A serious operator answers all of them in one message without hesitation.

1 · Who is your medical evacuation provider, and are we covered from every camp?

There should be a named provider and a clear answer about coverage from each specific location. "Our camps have satellite phones" is not an answer to this question.

2 · What is your protocol if a guest is seriously ill at the most remote camp?

You want a sequence: who is called, what aircraft, to which hospital, how long. Vagueness here means it has not been thought through.

3 · What qualifications do your guides hold, and are they trained in first aid?

Professional guiding certification varies by country, but it exists everywhere, and wilderness first-aid training should be standard.

4 · What is your vehicle maintenance and recovery procedure?

Breakdowns happen. What matters is whether there is a second vehicle and a radio protocol, or an optimistic mechanic four hours away.

5 · Do you carry public liability insurance, and for what amount?

A straightforward question with a straightforward answer. Hesitation is the finding.

Seven warning signs

Pressure to decide immediately. Real camps do sell out, and a good consultant will tell you which dates are genuinely tight. But "this price expires tonight" is a sales technique, not availability.

Payment to a personal account. Never acceptable. No legitimate explanation exists.

Stock photography throughout. An operator running these camps has its own images. Reverse-image-search two or three.

Evasiveness about concessions. Asked whether a camp sits on a private concession or in a national park, a real operator answers instantly. A reseller does not know.

Reading the quote itself

The document tells you as much as the website. Four things should be explicit and unambiguous.

If any of the four is vague, ask for it in writing before paying. The reply, and how quickly it comes, is itself a data point.

The shortcut, honestly

All of the above is doable in an hour, and for a $20,000 commitment an hour is cheap. But there is a legitimate shortcut, and it would be dishonest not to name it.

Booking through an established specialist that has already vetted its operator panel transfers most of this work to a company with a reputation to protect and a commercial relationship with the camps. You are buying their due diligence and their leverage when something goes wrong at 2am in Botswana.

The trade-off is real: slightly less direct control, and a consultant whose incentives you should still understand.
