Common questions

Tours & tickets, briefly answered

Do I need to book tickets and tours in advance?

For the headline attractions — the Alhambra, the Sagrada Família, the Royal Alcázar, the Uffizi, the Vatican — yes, often days or weeks ahead, as timed entry sells out. For smaller sights and most tours, a day or two is usually enough. Booking ahead also locks in the skip-the-line entry that saves the most time.

Is a skip-the-line ticket actually worth it?

At the busiest landmarks, unquestionably — it can save one to two hours in peak season, and at some sites (the Alcázar, the Vatican) it is effectively the only way in without a very early start. At quieter attractions the standard ticket is fine. Each ticket page above says which category it falls into.

Which platform is best — GetYourGuide, Tiqets or Viator?

GetYourGuide has the widest overall inventory and the most generous free-cancellation terms, making it the best default. Tiqets is stronger for museums and landmark attractions. Viator has deep coverage but a busier interface. For self-guided audio, WeGoTrip is the value pick. Our full comparison breaks it down city by city.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

Most tours on GetYourGuide offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time, and many tickets are refundable if unused. Timed-entry museum tickets are more often non-refundable once booked. Always check the cancellation line on the specific experience before you pay — it varies by supplier, not just by platform.

Are guided tours worth the extra cost over a plain ticket?

It depends on the site and on you. For dense, story-rich places — the Colosseum, the Alhambra, Auschwitz-Birkenau — a good guide transforms the visit. For a viewpoint or a garden, a plain ticket and a good audio guide are usually enough. Our private-guides guide covers where the upgrade pays off.

How do mobile tickets work?

Most experiences now issue an instant mobile ticket or QR code you show at the entrance from your phone — no printing, no collection desk. Download it before you arrive in case of patchy signal, and check whether the ticket needs your name or passport, as a few museums do.
