Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the springboard to the Andaman Sea's postcard scenery — the Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts are all day trips from here. The island itself spans the party strip of Patong, quiet northern beaches and a charming Sino-Portuguese Old Town. The trick is choosing your base. This is our shortlist of what's worth booking.
Live availability and prices from GetYourGuide, sorted by what travellers actually rate. The Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay boat trips are the headline bookings — and sell out.
Phuket's Andaman coast has a clear dry season (Nov–Apr) and a wet, rougher monsoon (May–Oct) when some boat trips pause for safety.
The non-activity essentials — same partners we use ourselves.
Worth having across Thailand — scooters, boat trips and the occasional clinic make medical cover and evacuation more than a box-tick. Subscription-style, cancel anytime.
Pre-booked transfer from Phuket International (HKT). The airport is in the north and many resorts are 45–60 min south, so a fixed-price car with a known price is well worth it.
Thailand data plans you install before you fly. No SIM swapping, no roaming charges, working the moment you land — useful for Grab, maps and bookings.
Compare rental providers across Phuket. Free cancellation on most. A car or scooter helps explore the spread-out beaches and Old Town, though many use Grab and resort shuttles.

Four to five days. The island's real draw is the day trips — Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, the Similan Islands (in season) — and you'll want a couple of those plus beach time and a visit to the Old Town. Many combine Phuket with nearby Krabi or the islands for a longer beach trip.
It depends on what you want. Patong is the lively, developed one (and the nightlife hub); Kata and Karon are family-friendly with good swimming; Surin, Bang Tao and the northern beaches are quieter and more upmarket; Nai Harn in the south is a local favourite. Base yourself by the vibe you're after.
Yes — the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay are stunning, with limestone cliffs and clear water, reached by a day-trip boat. They're also very popular, so go with an early-start tour, and note Maya Bay has visitor caps and seasonal closures to protect the reef. Phang Nga Bay is a quieter, equally dramatic alternative.
November to April is the dry season — calm Andaman seas, the best time for island-hopping and diving, with December to February the peak. May to October is the monsoon: cheaper and quieter, but rougher seas mean some boat trips are cancelled and swimming can be dangerous on west-coast beaches (watch the warning flags).
Parts of it — Patong especially — are very developed and busy. But Phuket is large and varied: the north and the Old Town are calmer and more characterful, and the island works best as a comfortable base for the spectacular Andaman day trips rather than a destination judged on Patong alone.
