Soneva is sixth of twenty brands on our luxury hotel brand hierarchy, at 88 out of 100: three resorts in the Maldives, Soneva Fushi, Soneva Jani and Soneva Secret, with no owner named on any Soneva page we opened and no room rate published outside its booking engine. This record is the evidence file behind that score. It sets out what Soneva publishes about itself, how the MICHELIN Guide rates the three resorts, what could not be found, and where our other pages and Soneva's own figures disagree.

How Soneva scores: 88 out of 100

Soneva scores 88 out of 100, sixth of twenty brands: full marks for rate band, 22 of 25 for consistency, 17 of 20 for service depth, 13 of 15 for food and drink and 16 of 20 for privacy and scale. The points are the luxury hotel brand hierarchy's of 7 September 2026, carried unchanged; under each criterion is what we could read on 26 September 2026. Soneva names no owner where the hierarchy names one, and our independent hotel group index credits it with Forbes ratings no Forbes page we opened would confirm.

Soneva publishes which three resorts it runs, when the brand was founded and who leads it commercially. It publishes little else a guest could check before booking: no owner, no rates, no villa counts and no Forbes Travel Guide rating on any page we opened. The MICHELIN Guide gives Three Keys, its highest grade, to Soneva Fushi and Soneva Secret, and Two Keys to Soneva Jani.

The evidence record

The record holds 18 facts about Soneva, each with its source and grade. Who owns Soneva?

Soneva names no single owner or founder on any page we opened; each resort sits under its own registered company, and Wikipedia says the founders, Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmstrom Shivdasani, hold the group privately.

Soneva's terms and conditions name three separate operating companies: Bunny Holdings (BVI) Limited for Soneva Fushi, Hillside Villa Private Limited for Soneva Jani and Secret Venture Private Limited for Soneva Secret, each registered at the same address in Male, Maldives. Its commercial headquarters, opened in Dubai on 12 September 2025, operates as Soneva Management (DIFC) Limited; the leadership named there is CEO Neil Gallagher, Chief Commercial Officer Joanna Flint and Chief Financial Officer Chris Whitehouse. No founder or owner is named on the home, about or newsroom pages, or in the Edge List release's "About Soneva" boilerplate.

Our hierarchy prints the owner as "Sonu Shivdasani (founder-owned)". Wikipedia, grade C, says Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmstrom Shivdasani founded Soneva in 1995 and hold it privately; no Soneva page we opened confirms either name. Our independent hotel group index ranks Soneva fourth of six independent groups at 53 out of 100.

How many resorts does Soneva have?

Soneva has three resorts, Soneva Fushi, Soneva Jani and Soneva Secret, all in the Maldives, the same number our hierarchy prints. No new opening was named in the newsroom releases we read.

Soneva prints no total villa count for any of the three; Wikipedia, grade C, gives Soneva Jani 26 villas, 24 of them over water. How Soneva is rated by the MICHELIN Guide and Forbes Travel Guide

The MICHELIN Guide gives Three Keys, its highest grade, to Soneva Fushi and Soneva Secret, and Two Keys to Soneva Jani; no Forbes Travel Guide star page could be read for any of the three.

The MICHELIN Guide's Maldives listing prints no year for any of the three Keys. Soneva says Forbes Travel Guide named all three resorts to its Edge List 2026, a features list rather than a star rating, and no Forbes Travel Guide page for a Soneva resort could be opened on 26 September 2026. Our independent hotel group index ranks Soneva fourth of six at 53 out of 100 and says Soneva Jani holds Forbes Five-Star and Soneva Fushi Four-Star, a claim this record could not confirm at either resort's own listing.

How to book Soneva, and whether any perks come with it

Soneva runs no loyalty or preferred-partner programme and prints no rate outside its own booking engine; every price we could read for it comes from our own reporting.

Who Soneva suits, and who it does not

Soneva suits a traveller who wants a private island with an environmental strand and will book without loyalty points or a published price; it suits less well anyone who wants a rate before enquiring, or status that carries to another hotel.

Soneva describes its resorts through named host roles rather than star ratings: a "Barefoot Butler" and "Barefoot Bookseller" at Soneva Secret, and a Teppanyaki Chef, a Water Sports Instructor and an Ayurvedic Doctor at Soneva Jani. On 8 June 2026 it announced a move from "Barefoot Luxury" to "Bare Luxury".
