By Richard J. · written from ValenciaRecord score 85/100Verified 26 September 2026
Mandarin Oriental is ninth of twenty brands on our luxury hotel brand hierarchy, at 85 out of 100: a member of the Jardine Matheson Group with, by its own count, 47 hotels, 16 residences and 40 homes in 29 countries and territories, and no rate published outside its booking engine. This record is the evidence file behind that score. It sets out what Mandarin Oriental publishes about itself, how Forbes Travel Guide and the MICHELIN Guide rate the Mandarin Oriental hotels we could read, what could not be found, and where our other pages and Mandarin Oriental's own figures disagree.

Mandarin Oriental scores 85 out of 100, ninth of twenty brands: full marks for food and drink, 22 of 25 for consistency, 18 of 20 for service depth, 16 of 20 for rate band, and 14 of 20 for privacy and scale. The points are the luxury hotel brand hierarchy's of 7 September 2026, carried unchanged; under each criterion is what we could read on 26 September 2026. Two figures the hierarchy prints do not match what Mandarin Oriental itself publishes: its portfolio count and how complete its parent's control now is, both set out below.
| Criterion | Points | Out of | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rate band | 16 | 20 | No rate is printed outside booking; Mandarin Oriental's best rate promise matches a lower rate found within 24 hours of booking and at least 48 hours before arrival, and takes a further 10% off. The hierarchy places it in its premium band, EUR 800 to 2,000 a night. |
| Consistency across the portfolio | 22 | 25 | Mandarin Oriental's own page counts 47 hotels, 16 residences and 40 homes in 29 countries and territories; Jardine Matheson's page says 45 hotels and 15 residences in 28. Forbes Travel Guide rates the Hong Kong, Bangkok, Paris, Hyde Park London and Tokyo hotels Five-Star. The MICHELIN Guide gives Three Keys to Bangkok, Qianmen in Beijing and Hyde Park, Two to The Landmark, Lutetia in Paris and Mayfair, One to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore, and lists Mandarin Oriental Paris and New York without one. |
| Service depth | 18 | 20 | Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok lists '24-hour butler service'; no staff numbers or room sizes were published on the pages we opened. |
| Food and drink | 15 | 15 | Mandarin Oriental says '33 stars awarded to 21 of our establishments'; its releases add a first Michelin star for Cherry Garden by Chef Fei in Singapore in August 2026. |
| Privacy and scale | 14 | 20 | Forbes Travel Guide gives Mandarin Oriental, Paris 138 rooms, Hyde Park London 181 rooms and suites and Bangkok 331 guest rooms and suites; The Landmark has 111 rooms and suites (Mandarin Oriental). |
| Total | 85 | 100 | Luxury hotel brand hierarchy score of 7 September 2026, carried unchanged; evidence read 26 September 2026. |
Mandarin Oriental publishes its founding date, its hotel count and a detailed loyalty programme, and names Jardine Matheson as its parent. It publishes less about who runs and owns it: no chief executive is named on its own site or press room, no ownership percentage or stock listing for Mandarin Oriental International Limited appears on any page we opened, and its own hotel count does not match its parent's. The outside ratings we could read are strong: Forbes Travel Guide rates five hotels Five-Star, and the MICHELIN Guide gives a Key to nine of the eleven Mandarin Oriental hotels we found in its city listings, Three Keys each to Bangkok, Qianmen in Beijing and Hyde Park, London, though it lists the Paris flagship and the New York hotel without one.

The record holds 19 facts about Mandarin Oriental, each with its source and grade. Grade A means the company's own site or terms; grade B means a rating body such as Forbes Travel Guide or the MICHELIN Guide, a registry or major press; grade C means a secondary source not confirmed elsewhere. Every line was read on 26 September 2026 unless its source says otherwise.

Mandarin Oriental is, in its own words, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group; no page we opened states an ownership percentage, and no chief executive is named on Mandarin Oriental's own site.
The legal notices page names Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group Limited, company number 04854821, with a registered office at 8/F, One Island East, 18 Westlands Rd, Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong (map), the same address the contact information page calls its global headquarters. The our company page says only that the Group is a member of the Jardine Matheson Group; no page we opened, on either company's site, states a shareholding or a stock exchange listing for Mandarin Oriental International Limited.
Two names appear only on Jardine Matheson's own page for Mandarin Oriental, not on Mandarin Oriental's own site or press room: Laurent Kleitman as Group Chief Executive and Matthew Bishop as Chief Financial Officer (Jardine Matheson). Our luxury hotel brand hierarchy states that Mandarin Oriental 'passed into full Jardine Matheson control in 2026'; no page we opened states a purchase, a delisting or a change of control, so this record treats that event as unconfirmed until a source can be opened. Unlike the brands ranked on our independent hotel group index, Mandarin Oriental sits inside a larger group; its founding is dated 1963, when The Mandarin opened in Hong Kong, and no page we opened names a founder.
Mandarin Oriental's own page counts 47 hotels, 16 residences and 40 homes in 29 countries and territories; Jardine Matheson's page for Mandarin Oriental gives a lower count, 45 hotels and 15 residences in 28 countries. The stay page names four hotels with an opening date, all read on 26 September 2026.
| Hotel | Where | Status on mandarinoriental.com |
|---|---|---|
| Mandarin Oriental, Manila (Makati) | Manila, Philippines | Opening November 2026 |
| Mandarin Oriental, Cortina | Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy | Opening early 2027 |
| Mandarin Oriental, Hangzhou | Hangzhou, China | Opening spring 2027 |
| Mandarin Oriental, Miami | Miami, United States | Reopening 2030 |
Neither of Mandarin Oriental's own figures matches the hierarchy's, which prints a fourth count, 46 properties. Our ultra-luxury hotel service, compared page, which carries no date line, still says '40+ properties' and that Mandarin Oriental 'runs no traditional points programme'; its own programme, Fans of M.O., offers tiered stay benefits, and the pages we read mention no points. Whether a hotel's first season is worth the risk, as at Manila, Cortina and Hangzhou, is weighed in should you book a brand-new luxury hotel.
Mandarin Oriental holds a MICHELIN Key at nine of the eleven hotels we found in the Guide's city listings, up to Three Keys at Bangkok, Qianmen in Beijing and Hyde Park, London, and five hotels we could read on Forbes Travel Guide are rated Five-Star.
| Hotel | Forbes Travel Guide | MICHELIN Keys | Rooms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong | Five-Star | One | Not read |
| Mandarin Oriental The Landmark, Hong Kong | Not read | Two | 111 rooms and suites |
| Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok | Five-Star | Three | 331 guest rooms and suites |
| Mandarin Oriental, Paris | Five-Star | Listed, no Key | 138 rooms |
| Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, Paris | Not read | Two | Not read |
| Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London | Five-Star | Three | 181 rooms and suites |
| Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London | Not read | Two | Not read |
| Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo | Five-Star | One | Not read |
| Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing | Not read | Three | Not read |
| Mandarin Oriental, Singapore | Not read | One | Not read |
| Mandarin Oriental, New York | Not read | Listed, no Key | Not read |
Forbes Travel Guide grades hotels Recommended, Four-Star or Five-Star, and the MICHELIN Guide gives one to three Keys to the hotels it selects; its city listings carry no date, though Mandarin Oriental's own release for The Landmark is dated 22 September 2026, three months after its reopening. The Paris listing also names a second Mandarin Oriental hotel, Mandarin Oriental Lutetia, Paris, with Two Keys; no page we opened dates when it joined the brand.
Mandarin Oriental's own dine page names Michelin-starred restaurants at more than a dozen hotels, including Man Wah and Amber in Hong Kong, Tapas Molecular Bar in Tokyo and Cherry Garden by Chef Fei in Singapore, and states 33 stars across 21 of its establishments. The MICHELIN Guide's own entries for Bangkok and The Landmark each link one of these restaurants, Anne-Sophie Pic at Le Normandie and Amber, without stating a star.
Mandarin Oriental runs its own three-tier loyalty programme, Fans of M.O., and a separate, invitation-only Fan Club for advisers; no page we opened named American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts or Virtuoso.
Its Fans of M.O. page sets out a base tier and a Silk tier, each with a welcome gift and a choice of stay perks, and an invitation-only Pearl tier with no benefits stated; a separate Fan Club page, for travel advisers, says access is by invitation only. Mandarin Oriental also runs the O&MO Alliance with Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, letting guests use benefits across both groups. Our Direct vs Amex FHR vs Virtuoso guide names 'Mandarin Oriental Fan Club' among the adviser perk programmes it compares across the industry; Fine Hotels + Resorts itself comes with the Amex Platinum, set against its rival in Amex Platinum vs Chase Sapphire Reserve, and premium cards more broadly are compared in best luxury travel credit cards.
A Mandarin Oriental stay earns no status in the Hilton, Marriott or Hyatt tiers compared in Hilton Diamond vs Marriott Titanium vs Hyatt Globalist and the hotel status match guide; the case for booking on the hotel rather than the points is made in you do not owe any brand your loyalty.
Mandarin Oriental suits a traveller who wants a large, well-rated city hotel with a butler and a best-rate guarantee; it suits less well anyone who wants a small resort, or status that carries to Hilton, Marriott or Hyatt.
Its rated hotels sit in major cities, from 138 rooms in Paris to 331 guest rooms and suites in Bangkok; how those cities rank for a short stay is in best city break destinations. Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok lists 24-hour butler service, and its dine page names Michelin-starred restaurants at hotels including Hong Kong, Tokyo, London and Singapore. No page we opened states a staff-to-guest ratio, a room size or a check-in style; what a hotel front desk records about a guest more generally is in hotel check-in privacy.
When Mandarin Oriental is full or does not suit, the hierarchy's other Tier 2 brands are the nearest match by score; how the wider set of twenty compares is in luxury hotel brand hierarchy, and how advisers and companies across the industry are chosen is compared in best luxury travel companies.

Mandarin Oriental appears on four Uncompromised Travel pages with a position or a figure, and holds a numbered rank on one of them.
| Page | Position | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury hotel brand hierarchy | No. 9 of 20, 85/100 | Prints 46 properties and says ownership 'passed into full Jardine Matheson control in 2026'; Mandarin Oriental's own page counts 47 and says only that it is a member of the Jardine Matheson Group, with no page confirming a change of control |
| Ultra-luxury hotel service, compared | No score, no date line | Says '40+ properties' and that Mandarin Oriental runs no traditional points programme; Mandarin Oriental's own page counts 47, and its Fans of M.O. programme offers tiered stay benefits with no points mentioned |
| Branded residences index | 17/100, scoring residences | Counts 14 current residences, 8 upcoming and 12 announced with unit counts; Mandarin Oriental's own residences page instead says 11 in operation, with 8 upcoming and 4 more announced without names |

The nearest alternatives on the same rubric are the brands scored closest to it: Rosewood, The Peninsula, Four Seasons and Soneva. Their scores sit one to three points from Mandarin Oriental's 85, in either direction.
| Brand | Score | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Rosewood | 86 | A larger portfolio, 44 properties by its own 2026 fact sheet, and Keys at 35 of its hotels, 7 Three, 19 Two, 9 One |
| The Peninsula | 85 | Owned by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, chaired by Sir Michael Kadoorie, with hotel pages for twelve cities |
| Four Seasons | 87 | A finder page listing 144 hotels and resorts, led by president and chief executive Alejandro Reynal from Toronto |
| Soneva | 88 | Three Maldives resorts only; the MICHELIN Guide gives Three Keys to Fushi and Secret and Two to Jani |
Eight things a guest would want could not be found or verified for Mandarin Oriental. Supplying a verifiable source closes a gap; it changes the evidence, never the rubric.

Mandarin Oriental is a member of the Jardine Matheson Group; no page it publishes states an ownership percentage or names a chief executive. Laurent Kleitman is named Group Chief Executive only on Jardine Matheson's own page for Mandarin Oriental. It scores 85 out of 100 on this record, ninth of twenty brands.
Mandarin Oriental says 47 hotels, 16 residences and 40 homes in 29 countries and territories; Jardine Matheson's own page for Mandarin Oriental says 45 hotels and 15 residences in 28 countries. Four more hotels are due to open or reopen between November 2026 and 2030.
Yes, Fans of M.O., with a base tier, a Silk tier and an invitation-only Pearl tier, plus a separate, invitation-only Fan Club for travel advisers. No page it publishes mentions American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts or Virtuoso, and a stay earns no status with Hilton, Marriott or Hyatt.
Mandarin Oriental prints no rate outside its booking engine. Its best rate promise matches a lower rate found within 24 hours of booking, at least 48 hours before arrival, and takes a further 10% off; our luxury hotel brand hierarchy places it in the premium band, EUR 800 to 2,000 a night.
The MICHELIN Guide's city listings give Three Keys to Bangkok, Qianmen in Beijing and Hyde Park, London, Two Keys to The Landmark and Lutetia in Paris and Mayfair, London, and One Key to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore. Its Paris flagship and its New York hotel are listed without a Key, and no portfolio-wide Keys total is published.
The five we could read are rated Five-Star: Hong Kong, Bangkok, Paris, Hyde Park London and Tokyo. Pages for other Mandarin Oriental hotels could not be opened.
Mandarin Oriental, Paris has 138 rooms, Hyde Park London 181 rooms and suites, Bangkok 331 guest rooms and suites, and The Landmark, Hong Kong 111 rooms and suites. Room counts for its other hotels were not published on the pages we opened.
The Mandarin, which opened in Hong Kong in 1963. Mandarin Oriental's own page names no founder for that opening.
Mandarin Oriental's legal notices give 8/F, One Island East, 18 Westlands Rd, Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong, which its contact page also names as its global headquarters.
On our luxury hotel brand hierarchy Rosewood scores 86 and Mandarin Oriental 85. Mandarin Oriental leads on food and drink, 15 against 14; Rosewood leads on privacy and scale, 16 against 14. The two match on rate band, consistency and service depth.
