Best places to visit in Japan with children

The six best places in Japan with children are Tokyo, Kyoto with Nara, Osaka, Hakone, Hiroshima with Miyajima, and Okinawa. They are listed in the order most families visit them. The first five sit on one Shinkansen line, which is what makes Japan easier with children than its distance suggests: trains run to the minute, a child aged 6 to 11 pays half fare, and under-sixes travel free without a seat.

How the comparison works. No scores. Each place is compared on what a parent has to decide: how many nights, which ages it suits, the one booking that sells out, and when to avoid it. Opening dates and tax changes were read on 5 October 2026 and are linked. The verdicts are ours.

Assessed, not listed: Hokkaido, which is the answer for a winter trip built around skiing at Niseko from December to March and belongs on a different itinerary; Kanazawa and Takayama, which suit a second visit; and Nagano's snow monkeys, a long day for small children.

The pattern is that Japan with children works on a rhythm of two busy cities and one rest. Tokyo and Kyoto supply more than a family can use. Hakone or a beach is what stops a ten-year-old tiring of temples by day six.

Which part of Japan is best for each age?

Under-sixes do best in Tokyo, Hakone and Okinawa; children of 6 to 11 in Tokyo, Osaka and Nara; and teenagers in Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. The test is how much of each day a child of that age can enjoy on foot and without a queue.

AgeBest placesDays that workSkip or shorten
Under 6Tokyo, Hakone, OkinawaParks, aquariums, short train rides, a ryokan with a private bathLong temple days in Kyoto; late dinners

Three generationsTokyo, Kyoto, HakonePrivate guide and car, one ryokan, short walking daysRush-hour trains and station stairs

Two cautions. Japanese family rooms are rare outside resorts, so a family of four usually needs two connecting rooms, and those are limited and should be requested at booking. And most ryokan serve a set dinner at a fixed hour; ask for a children's menu when reserving.

Tokyo or Kyoto with children?

Both, in that order: Tokyo first for four or five nights while everyone has energy, then Kyoto for three or four, with the Nozomi Shinkansen between them taking about 2 hours 15 minutes. Tokyo absorbs jet lag well because something is open at any hour. Kyoto asks for patience and rewards early starts: Fushimi Inari is free, open at all hours and empty at 7 am.

From Kyoto, Nara is under an hour away and Osaka fifteen minutes by Shinkansen, so one hotel can cover all three. Families who would rather move less should choose Kyoto as the base and give Osaka a day. Our Shinkansen notebook explains seats and luggage, and the JR Pass guide shows when a pass pays.

Best time to visit Japan with children

The best times for Japan with children are late March to early April and late October to November; the Easter and autumn half-term holidays line up with both. Spring brings cherry blossom to Tokyo and Kyoto and the highest hotel rates of the year. Autumn is drier and calmer, with leaf colour in Kyoto from mid-November.

Summer is the difficult season and the one most school calendars force. June to mid-July is rainy, and late July and August are hot and humid, regularly above 33°C in the cities. A summer trip works if it is built for the heat: mornings out, afternoons indoors or in a pool, and the last days in Okinawa or the mountains. Avoid Golden Week (29 April to 5 May), Obon in mid-August and New Year, when Japan itself is on holiday and trains sell out.

Who plans luxury family trips to Japan?

A planner earns its fee in Japan on three things a family cannot easily do alone: connecting rooms and ryokan that take children, timed tickets that sell out, and guides who are good with the age in question. We compare the specialists in Best Luxury Tour Operators for Japan and the family houses in Best Family Luxury Tour Operators.

Three planning rules for Japan with children

1 · Send the luggage ahead. Hotels forward suitcases overnight to the next hotel for roughly ¥2,000 to ¥4,000 a bag. A family then boards the Shinkansen with day bags only, and avoids the reservation that oversized cases need on the Tokyo to Kyoto line.

2 · Book three things first. Connecting rooms, the Ghibli Museum and Universal Studios Japan's timed entry go before flights are even confirmed. The Japan National Tourism Organization lists official ticket sites.

3 · Plan one fixed thing a day. One reserved visit in the morning, then space. Children remember the vending machines, the trains and the convenience-store lunches as clearly as the temples.

What changed for family trips to Japan in 2026

Four changes raise the cost or the paperwork a little. Japan's departure tax tripled to ¥3,000 a person on 1 July 2026, so a family of four pays ¥12,000 inside its air fares. Kyoto's accommodation tax rose on 1 March 2026 to as much as ¥10,000 a person a night at rooms priced above ¥100,000. From 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping becomes a refund claimed at the airport on departure. And for families adding a beach, the Junglia theme park opened in northern Okinawa in July 2025.
