Who actually runs the trip
The three names on this page are two companies and a licence: Lindblad Expeditions owns 80.1% of Natural Habitat Adventures and, through it, Thomson Safaris; National Geographic Expeditions is a brand licensed to Lindblad for ships and to G Adventures for its African land Journeys. Lindblad bought its stake in Natural Habitat in 2016 and Natural Habitat bought Wineland-Thomson Adventures, the owner of Thomson Safaris, Gibb's Farm and Nature Discovery, on 30 April 2024. Lindblad's 2023 press release extends its National Geographic licence for expedition cruises and co-branded trips to 2040. The National Geographic Journeys sold for Africa, such as Journeys: Kenya Safari Experience, are operated by G Adventures. So a buyer choosing between the three is choosing between a Colorado wildlife operator, a small-group land tour run by a Toronto company under a licensed name, and a cruise line with no African land trip of its own.

Natural Habitat Adventures publishes 39 African itineraries from USD 8,995 a person (Family South Africa custom safari, 10 days), carries a Trustpilot score of 4.9 from more than 2,850 reviews, and is 80.1% owned by Lindblad. Founded in 1985 by Ben Bressler, who keeps 19.9% and the presidency, it runs from Louisville, Colorado, and has been WWF's travel partner since 2003, a marketing and conservation relationship rather than ownership. Its Secluded South Africa trip, 10 days for USD 17,995 a person, includes an Expedition Leader, local guides, meals, selected drinks, gratuities and transfers for a group of no more than six, with internal flights billed separately at USD 3,684 to 4,672. Deposits run from USD 500 to 1,500 a person, often non-refundable, with the balance 120 days before departure. It loses points for expertise, because it has no African office and Africa is one continent among many, and for support hours, which are US Mountain Time office hours with no published 24-hour line. National Geographic Expeditions: a licence, two operators
The African land trips sold as National Geographic Journeys are operated by G Adventures and priced from USD 6,099 a person for eight days in Kenya, in groups of no more than six; the ships sold as National Geographic Expeditions are Lindblad's. Eight Journeys cover Africa, including Kenya, Rwanda and Kenya, Namibia and Victoria Falls, and several Southern Africa routes. G Adventures shows a regular fare and a discounted fare on each trip page. What is not published is who operates the trip on the National Geographic site itself, any deposit or balance term for the land trips, or a review record that can be tied to them: the only Tripadvisor listing found, for a Washington DC office, shows 2.5 from 27 reviews and is not a reliable guide. The score of 55 reflects clear prices and a small group size against thin evidence on everything else. A separate 21-day Southern Africa Safari on nationalgeographic.com could not be priced or attributed to an operator when read for this page.
Lindblad Expeditions: the owner, and the ships
Lindblad Expeditions sells no African land safari under its own name, but it owns most of Natural Habitat and all of Thomson Safaris, and it operates 24 ships under the National Geographic-Lindblad name. Founded in 1979 by Sven Lindblad and listed on NASDAQ as LIND, it takes a 15% deposit on cabin fares with the balance 120 days before departure, according to its reservation terms. Its African connection runs through its subsidiaries: Natural Habitat since 2016, and Wineland-Thomson Adventures since April 2024, which brought Thomson Safaris, the Gibb's Farm lodge in the Ngorongoro highlands and the Nature Discovery Kilimanjaro operation, all Tanzania-based. Natural Habitat's founder said at the time that those operations would continue as stand-alone offerings. Lindblad's own Trustpilot UK page shows 2.6 from four reviews, too few to mean anything; its cruise record is assessed on the expedition cruise index, where it scores 88 with a deduction for the older ships outside its polar fleet.

Booking terms and protection
Natural Habitat and Lindblad publish their terms; the National Geographic Africa Journeys do not on the pages read. Natural Habitat takes USD 500 to 1,500 a person, often non-refundable, with the balance 120 days out and charged to the card on file unless arranged otherwise. Lindblad takes 15% with the balance 120 days out. None of the three names a UK-style bond, which is expected for US companies; Natural Habitat holds a Better Business Bureau A+ rating and Adventure Travel Trade Association membership, and no USTOA membership was found for it or for Lindblad.

Which to choose
Choose Natural Habitat for a small-group or private wildlife safari with a published price, a large review record and a parent that now owns ground operations in Tanzania; choose a National Geographic Journey for the lowest published entry price, knowing that G Adventures runs it; choose Lindblad only for a ship. A traveller who wants the National Geographic name on a Tanzanian safari will find Lindblad's ownership of Thomson Safaris more relevant than the Journeys, which are a licensed product of a different operator.
