Is Ker & Downey worth it?
The Botswana camps, yes, for a traveller who wants small, owner-run Okavango camps with park fees inside a published rate and is happy below the marquee majors: Shinde or Kanana for a first Delta stay, Okuti for big cats on a budget, Dinaka as a Kalahari contrast leg. The Cape Town planner, only after it has answered the questions its score raises. The name itself is worth nothing; the 1946 history belongs to a Nairobi outfitter with no reviews.
What the Botswana company offers is a classic-safari model at a legible price. Its camps are four to eight tents; three of them sit on private concessions where night drives and walking are allowed; the rate sheet is the most complete in this site's safari cluster after Singita's, and it includes the park fees and evacuation cover that other operators add later. Donald Ker and Syd Downey, Kenyan professional hunters, agreed to combine in 1945 and Ker & Downey Safaris traded from January 1946 in Nairobi. Harry Selby became a director in 1962, and as Ker Downey & Selby the firm opened Botswana's first photographic lodge, Khwai River Lodge, in 1968. The Botswana arm took the Ker & Downey Botswana name when Selby resigned in 1993 and joined Chobe Holdings in 2009.
