How to plan a Christmas market trip
Go on a weekday. Weekend evenings are the busiest everywhere; several markets, such as Geneva and Budapest, stay open later on Fridays and Saturdays.
Pair markets by rail. Strasbourg and Colmar are about 30 minutes apart, and Basel is about an hour and a quarter from Strasbourg; Vienna and Budapest are under three hours apart by train.
Book central hotels early. Rooms near Strasbourg cathedral, Vienna's Ring and Prague's Old Town fill first for the Advent weekends. For a city break scored on published facts, see the best city break destinations of 2026.
Check the closing day. Most German markets close on 23 or 24 December; if your trip is between Christmas and New Year, choose from the list above.
