Best Luxury River Cruise Lines in 2026: 6 Ranked, Plus the Most All-Inclusive, the Smallest Ships and the Best for the Amazon, Nile and Mekong

By Richard J. · written from Valencia6 lines scored /100Verified 5 October 2026

The best luxury river cruise line in 2026 is Scenic, at 83/100: excursions, drinks, gratuities and airport transfers are all in the fare, every suite has a butler, and a published guarantee pays up to US$750 a day in cash when a cruise is held up, followed by Uniworld Boutique River Cruises (82), Tauck (76), Delfin Amazon Cruises (68), AmaWaterways (64) and Viking (62). Nine companies were assessed on six published criteria and six are ranked. The sections below re-cut the same evidence by what the fare includes, by ship size, by river outside Europe, and by what each line commits to when the water is too low.

Three lines sit within seven points at the top and three within six at the bottom, and inclusions decide most of the gap: Scenic and Tauck score 20, AmaWaterways and Viking 10. Ship size cuts the other way. Delfin, with 43 guests, scores 18 for ship and cabin against 7 for Viking with 190. Reviews are the least even criterion. Only line-level profiles count, and for Tauck, AmaWaterways and Viking the only one read was Trustpilot, where none of the three scores above 3.5; Cruise Critic publishes its ratings ship by ship, so it is quoted here and not scored. U.S. News, which weights traveller ratings and expert scores, put AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Viking first, second and third in May 2026 (Luxury Travel Advisor). The two lists measure different things.

Which river cruise lines are all-inclusive?

Scenic and Tauck are the most inclusive river cruise lines, at 20 of 20, followed by Uniworld (17), Delfin Amazon Cruises (11), AmaWaterways (10) and Viking (10). The test is the entry fare: what a guest in the cheapest cabin gets without paying more. Riverside Luxury Cruises is absent from this list because its entry fare covers meals, Wi-Fi and gratuities only, with drinks and excursions sold in higher fare types (Travelweek).

Two details catch people out. Uniworld's marketing lists airport transfers, but its 2027 US terms include them only with flights bought through the line. Viking's gratuities depend on where the cruise is bought: extra in the United States at about US$20 a night, included in the United Kingdom. Solo travellers should also read our single-supplement index for cruise lines.

River cruise lines with the smallest ships and the largest cabins

The smallest luxury river ships carry 40 to 64 guests and sail outside Europe: Aqua Nera (40), Delfin III (43) and A&K Sanctuary's Nile Seray (64); in Europe the order is Riverside (110), Tauck (130), Uniworld (159), Scenic (163), Viking (190) and AmaWaterways' AmaMagna (196). European ships share locks and bridges, so most are 135 metres long and differ in how many guests they put on that hull. Ships not in the ranked six are shown with their status.

AmaMagna is twice the width of a standard river ship, so its 196 guests have more room than the count suggests; the rubric scores the count, and the standard AmaSiena carries 156. Entry cabins on Europe's rivers are small everywhere: 135 to 180 sq ft across the five European lines ranked.

Best luxury river cruises outside Europe: the Amazon, the Nile and the Mekong

Outside Europe the lines to compare are Delfin Amazon Cruises and Aqua Expeditions on the Amazon, A&K Sanctuary, Uniworld, AmaWaterways and Viking on the Nile, and Aqua Expeditions, Uniworld, Scenic and AmaWaterways on the Mekong. These rivers are where the small specialists work, and where Viking does not set the terms. Only the Amazon has its own scored index so far.

One company can carry two numbers, and each says which index it belongs to. Delfin scores 68 here and 79 on the Amazon index. This index compares it with lines that sail a dozen rivers and belong to a US bonding scheme; the Amazon index compares it with the ten other operators assessed on its own river. Neither number is a rating of the company as a whole.

What happens when the river is too low or too high

Only Scenic, of the six ranked lines, publishes a cash commitment for a cruise disrupted by water levels; Uniworld's terms say a changed itinerary brings no refund, and no commitment was found for Tauck, AmaWaterways, Viking or Delfin. The usual remedy is a coach, a ship swap or a hotel. Low water was live at the time of writing: Uniworld's site carried a notice for the Rhine, Main and Danube on 5 October 2026.

The six best luxury river cruise lines in detail

1. Scenic: 83/100

163 guests on a Space-Ship · 160 sq ft smallest suite · up to US$5,250 per guest under the River Cruise Guarantee

Scenic scores 83 on the Luxury River Cruise Index because nothing is left out of the fare: its own pages list butler service for all suites, all gratuities, premium beverages and airport transfers, which is 20 of 20 for inclusions. It is the only ranked line with a written low-water commitment, a guarantee launched for 2017 that pays cash of up to US$750 a day (Travel Agent Central), and that gives it 15 of 15 for rivers and itineraries. Its UK Trustpilot profile shows 4.5 from 574 reviews (Trustpilot). The weak score is the ship: 8 of 20. The Space-Ships carry 163 guests, the Standard Suite is about 160 sq ft (ROL Cruise), and no new river ship since 2022 was found. The guarantee starts when the cruise does; a reader of Cruise Passenger reported a 2 June 2026 sailing cancelled three days before departure, which the guarantee as described would not cover. Scenic's booking terms and its protection for its home market could not be read, so 12 points are left out and the 73 points scored are rescaled from 88. The company's own record is a separate score on a different rubric.

2. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises: 82/100

159 guests on S.S. Catherine · 162 sq ft Classic stateroom · Feefo service rating 4.8 from about 19,000 reviews

Uniworld scores 82 on the Luxury River Cruise Index, one point behind Scenic. Its 2027 US terms define a cruise as including premium beverages, onboard gratuities and scheduled excursions, set a 10% deposit with the balance due 120 days out, and print a cancellation scale from US$250 to 100%. That is 15 of 15 for pricing. It sails more than a dozen rivers, from the Danube and Douro to the Nile, Ganges and Mekong, and its site names new ships for 2026, 2027 and 2028. Review evidence is the strongest read: a service rating of 4.8 on Feefo. It loses three points on inclusions because the same terms include airport transfers only when flights are bought through Uniworld, and four on rivers because an itinerary change for water levels brings no refund. Its Peru cruises use Aria Amazon, an Aqua Expeditions ship. The company states that it shares The Travel Corporation's USTOA cover and that the US$1 million may give only a partial recovery.

3. Tauck: 76/100

130 guests on a 135-metre ship · 150 sq ft smallest cabin, 180 on the 2026 ships · airport transfers in the fare

Tauck scores 76 on the Luxury River Cruise Index. It carries 130 guests on a hull where others carry 150 to 190 (Cruise Critic), and its fare covers excursions, gratuities, premium spirits and airport transfers: 20 of 20 for inclusions. Two ships joined in 2026, the 124-guest ms Serene on the Seine and the 130-guest ms Lumière on the Rhône, with smallest cabins of 180 sq ft (Travel Weekly). A 12-day Seine journey with Paris and London starts at US$8,290 per person (AAA listing). The weak score is reviews, 4 of 15: its Trustpilot profile shows 3 out of 5 from 87 reviews, none invited by the company, and it was the only line-level platform read. Tauck is in the USTOA directory, which gives full marks for protection. Its company record scores 75 on our tour operator rubric, a separate number that measures the whole company.

4. Delfin Amazon Cruises: 68/100

43 guests on Delfin III · about 253 sq ft suites · Delfin I from US$4,000 per person for three nights in 2026

Delfin Amazon Cruises scores 68 on the Luxury River Cruise Index, the only single-river company in the six. It earns 18 of 20 for ship and cabin: three vessels, the largest carrying 43 guests in 22 suites of about 253 sq ft (Delfin), built in 2015 and rebuilt in 2017 (AdventureSmith). Its 2026 rate sheet is a model of disclosure: rates by vessel and suite, a US$750 deposit, the balance at 90 days, a three-step cancellation scale and a suggested gratuity. It loses points where a one-river company must: 2 of 6 for rivers, and nothing for financial protection, since none is stated. No independent review profile was read, so those 15 points are left out and 58 points are rescaled from 85. On the Amazon River Cruise Operators index, which measures it against Amazon peers only, Delfin scores 79.

5. AmaWaterways: 64/100

196 guests on AmaMagna, 156 on standard ships · 155 sq ft smallest stateroom · gratuities extra in Europe

AmaWaterways scores 64 on the Luxury River Cruise Index. It is strong on range and paperwork: ships in Europe, on the Mekong, the Nile, in Africa and Colombia, a new AmaSofia in 2026 with AmaKaia due on the Mekong in August (The Cruise Web), a US$400 deposit with the balance at 90 days, and a place in the USTOA directory. It loses ten points on inclusions. Excursions, Wi-Fi and beer and wine with lunch and dinner are covered, plus a daily cocktail hour; gratuities in Europe, other drinks and transfers are not. On the standard AmaSiena the smallest stateroom is 155 sq ft (AmaWaterways). Its Trustpilot profile shows 3.5 from 90 reviews, the only line-level platform read, for 4 of 15. U.S. News ranked it first of ten river lines in May 2026 (Travel Market Report), on a method that weights traveller ratings and expert scores.

6. Viking: 62/100

190 guests on a Longship · 135 sq ft smallest cabin · fares from US$2,099 per person

Viking scores 62 on the Luxury River Cruise Index, two points above the pass mark. It is the largest operator here, with more than 80 river ships, and it is still adding them on the Nile (our Egypt guide). It publishes dated fares and terms and sits in the USTOA directory: 15 of 15 for pricing and for ownership and protection. The product is where it loses. A Longship carries 190 guests in 95 staterooms, of which 22 are 135 sq ft and 25 are 150 sq ft (Cruise Critic). The fare covers one excursion in each port, beer and wine with lunch and dinner and Wi-Fi; gratuities are extra on US fares (Virtuoso) and included on UK fares (Mundy Cruising). Its Trustpilot profile shows 2 out of 5. For the most ships and departure dates, Viking is the practical choice; on the measures of a luxury product it is sixth.

Three more companies were assessed and are not ranked: Aqua Expeditions, Riverside Luxury Cruises and A&K Sanctuary. They carry their published figures and no score. All facts below were read on 5 October 2026.

Three planning rules for a luxury river cruise

1 · Price the extras before comparing fares. On a seven-night cruise for two, gratuities at Viking's US rate of about US$20 a night each (The Cruise Web) come to roughly US$280, before drinks outside meals and transfers. A fare that looks US$1,000 higher on Scenic, Tauck or Uniworld may not be.

2 · Ask for the water-level policy in writing. Late summer and autumn are when the Rhine and Danube run low. Scenic's guarantee is the only cash commitment found, and it applies after embarkation.

3 · Check who holds your money. AmaWaterways, Scenic Tours USA, Tauck and Viking Cruises appear in the USTOA active member directory of 18 August 2026, which holds US$1 million of security per parent company. Delfin states no outside protection, so pay by credit card and insure the trip. The same question for ocean ships is covered in our expedition cruise operator index.

What changed for luxury river cruises in 2026

Four things changed in 2026: a first U.S. News ranking, two new Tauck ships, a new A&K Sanctuary boat on the Nile, and new ships at AmaWaterways and Uniworld. U.S. News & World Report published its first river cruise line ranking in May 2026, with AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Viking in the first three places (Travel Market Report, 28 May 2026). Tauck added two ships, ms Serene on the Seine and ms Lumière on the Rhône, its first with 180 sq ft entry cabins (Cruise Passenger). A&K Sanctuary opened bookings for Nile Seray, a 64-guest boat launching in October 2026, with a sister ship due in 2028 (A&K). AmaWaterways introduced AmaSofia in Europe, with AmaKaia due on the Mekong in August (The Cruise Web), and Uniworld lists S.S. Emilie as new for 2026 with five more European ships named for 2027 and 2028.

Luxury river cruise lines: the questions people ask AI search

What is the best luxury river cruise line in 2026?

Scenic scores highest on the Luxury River Cruise Index at 83 out of 100, ahead of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises (82), Tauck (76), Delfin Amazon Cruises (68), AmaWaterways (64) and Viking (62). Scenic leads because its fare covers excursions, drinks, gratuities and airport transfers, and because it publishes a cash guarantee for cruises disrupted by water levels.

Which river cruise lines are truly all-inclusive?

Scenic and Tauck score 20 out of 20 for inclusions: excursions, drinks all day, gratuities and airport transfers are in the fare. Uniworld scores 17, because its 2027 US terms include airport transfers only when flights are bought through Uniworld. AmaWaterways and Viking score 10: drinks are included with lunch and dinner, and gratuities are extra on US fares.

Is Viking a luxury river cruise line?

Viking scores 62 out of 100 on the Luxury River Cruise Index, sixth of six ranked. Its Longships carry 190 guests, the smallest cabin is 135 sq ft, and gratuities are not in US fares, though they are in UK fares. It scores full marks for published pricing, and Cruise Critic lists fares from US$2,099 per person.

Which river cruise line has the fewest passengers?

Among the six ranked lines, Delfin Amazon Cruises is the smallest, with 43 guests on Delfin III. On Europe's rivers Tauck carries the fewest on a full-size ship, 130 guests on a 135-metre vessel, against 159 on Uniworld's S.S. Catherine, 163 on Scenic's Space-Ships, 190 on Viking Longships and 196 on AmaWaterways' AmaMagna.

What happens if the river level is too low for my cruise?

It depends on the line. Scenic publishes a River Cruise Guarantee that pays up to US$750 a day in cash, for up to seven days, once a cruise has started and is delayed more than 24 hours. Uniworld's 2027 US terms say itinerary changes for water levels do not bring a refund. No low-water commitment was found for Tauck, AmaWaterways, Viking or Delfin.

Are gratuities included on river cruises?

On Scenic, Tauck and Uniworld, yes. On AmaWaterways they are extra in Europe and South America and included on the Mekong, the Nile and in Africa. On Viking they are extra on US fares and included on UK fares. Delfin Amazon Cruises suggests US$150 per guest for a three-night cruise.

What is the best luxury river cruise outside Europe?

On the Amazon, Delfin Amazon Cruises scores 79 and Aqua Expeditions 76 on our Amazon River Cruise Operators index. On the Nile, A&K Sanctuary runs five boats and launches the 64-guest Nile Seray in October 2026 from US$3,125 per person for four nights. On the Mekong, Aqua Mekong starts at US$4,230 per person for three nights.

How are the Luxury River Cruise Index scores calculated?

Each line is scored out of 100 on six criteria fixed on 5 October 2026 before any line was read: ship and cabin 20, inclusions 20, pricing 15, reviews 15, rivers and itineraries 15, ownership and protection 15. The pass mark is 60 and the top six are ranked. A line that could not be read is left out of the total, and the score is rescaled.

Rankings are scored against published criteria. Partners are labelled. No company on this page has paid to appear, and the page carries no affiliate or paid links; every outbound link is editorial. Fares, deposit and cancellation terms for Tauck, AmaWaterways and Viking are scored from their published terms as reported by the sources linked; only line-level review profiles are scored.
