Nomad Tanzania, the Arusha camp company that runs 13 camps and houses across Tanzania, scores 57/100 on our six-criterion operator review: full marks for first-hand African expertise, 16 of 20 for independent reviews, and low marks where the criteria reward multi-country specialists that sell direct. Its camps are among the best-reviewed in East Africa, with Lamai rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor from 559 reviews and three World Travel Awards in 2025. What holds the score back is that Nomad sells one country, publishes a price for one product, runs no UK or US phone line and does not name the owners behind it.

Nomad Tanzania scores 57/100: as a place to stay and a team to be guided by it has one of the strongest records we hold, and as a company a buyer can check before paying it has one of the thinnest. Its founding guides pooled 'two Land Rovers and a trailer' to start one of Tanzania's first safari companies, and managers such as Ken Koskey at Kigelia have been with it for more than 20 years. The six criteria below were built for specialists that plan trips across many countries and sell direct; a Tanzania-only camp company that sells mostly through agents scores low on breadth, prices and service lines by design, which is why its score sits below the quality of its camps.

How much does Nomad Tanzania cost per night?

Nomad's camps run from USD 815 to 875 per person sharing per night at Kigelia in Ruaha to USD 1,280 to 2,250 at Entamanu on the Ngorongoro rim and USD 1,125 to 2,365 at Greystoke Mahale, according to Go2Africa's camp pages, which do not say which season each end of the range covers. Nomad's own site prices only its Charlie walking camps, at USD 855 to 1,540 per person per night, and its FAQ says rates generally include accommodation, meals, drinks, park fees, your guide and activities. Its offers cut circuit rates by up to 30% for five or more nights, halve western charter flights (saving USD 945 per person on seven nights) and give children sharing with an adult 70% off. What do Nomad Tanzania reviews say?

Nomad's camps are rated between 4.9 and 5.0 on Tripadvisor, from 559 reviews at Lamai to 107 at Chada, and Kuro and Sand Rivers both had new reviews in July 2026. Guests praise the guides and the settings: "The staff and guides were inviting and welcoming with great knowledge of animal behavior," reads one Kuro review. The recurring criticisms are about physical demands rather than service: a Greystoke reviewer was told a chimpanzee walk would take four hours and it took seven, and a Chada guest found fly-camping rougher than expected. The company itself has only two SafariBookings reviews and none on Trustpilot; its own site reports 1,670 reviews averaging 5 out of 5 without naming the platform. Nomad Tanzania's awards, dated

Nomad's camps won three World Travel Awards in 2025, and the company was named Africa's Leading Conservation Company at the 2026 awards after nominations in 2024 and 2025. Nomad says Lamai has been Tanzania's Leading Safari Lodge for the seventh year running. Its homepage press strip names The Times, the Telegraph, Condé Nast, the Financial Times, Afar and Travel + Leisure without dates or articles. Where Nomad Tanzania operates

Nomad works in Tanzania alone, from the northern Serengeti to Lake Tanganyika and the southern rivers, and suggests Zanzibar for a beach stay it does not run. Its camps cover the classic northern circuit and the remote west and south, where few other companies have permanent camps. Journeys include mobile migration safaris, walking with the Charlie camps, fly-camping at Chada and Sand Rivers, chimpanzee trekking at Greystoke, boating on the Rufiji, family tents and a honeymoon offer; its 11 suggested itineraries run from five to eleven days.

Who owns Nomad Tanzania?

Nomad Tanzania's website names no owner; its terms name Nomad Tanzania Limited of Arusha, and UK filings show a holding group, renamed Conservation Travel Investments Limited on 23 July 2026, that PitchBook describes as private and equity-backed. The company grew from guides and camps: the guide Richard Bonham, who co-founded Sand Rivers in 1994, later founded Nomad Tanzania with other conservationists, and Go2Africa describes four people with separate base camps merging. In the UK, Nomad Safaris Limited is a tour operator with Mark Houldsworth and Christopher Stevens as directors, controlled by Nomad Conservation Group Management Limited. The holding company lists Laura De Vere, Mark Houldsworth, Christopher Stevens, George Theobald, Michael Turner and John Watherston as directors.

Nomad Tanzania's booking terms and financial protection

Nomad takes a minimum 20% deposit within seven days of confirmation and full payment 60 days before travel; cancelling 61 days or more ahead costs 20%, and cancelling later costs everything. Its terms are written for the agents who book on a guest's behalf, apply Tanzanian law, carry no date and name no bond or trust account; they require comprehensive insurance and include emergency evacuation cover in every costed itinerary.
