Which Safari Company Is Best for a First Safari in Tanzania? Eleven Companies Compared on What They Publish, and a Specialist's Case for Skipping the Crowds

By Richard Jasinski·Updated 14 October 2026

Extraordinary Journeys is the company this page features for a first safari in Tanzania: its specialist would send a first-timer who wants solitude rather than a box-ticking circuit on its Private Great Migration safari, 12 days from $25,000 per person, every night in a private reserve (Little Chem Chem, Mwiba Lodge, Singita Faru Faru) with an exclusive-use vehicle. Ten other companies publish first-safari guidance that names Tanzania, and six of them print a Tanzania price: Yellow Zebra Safaris (Northern Circuit, 9 nights, GBP 5,461 to 6,919 per person, called “the perfect introduction to Tanzania”), Thomson Safaris (Essential Tanzania Safari “curated for first-time and seasoned safari-goers alike”; Highlights 8 days from $7,690 per adult), Rhino Africa (Tanzania Revealed, 10 days, $8,622 per person sharing), Mahlatini (Tanzania family safari and beach, 9 nights, $8,700 per person including flights), Micato Safaris (Tanzania Spectacular, 10 days, from $20,700 per person) and Go2Africa (a Kenya and Tanzania migration safari, EUR 11,585 to 19,220 per person). Africa Adventure Company, African Portfolio, Piper & Heath Travel and Steppes Travel publish the guidance without a priced Tanzania first-safari trip. This page gives no score. Each company is shown with what its own website says and the date it was read, and the advice on where a first safari in Tanzania should go comes from Pearl Jurist-Schoen, Head of Africa Sales at Extraordinary Journeys, who answered this site’s questions in writing about a route through two private reserves, Mwiba and Grumeti.

Who is on this page, and why

A company is on this page if its own website publishes first-safari guidance (a guide, an FAQ answer or an itinerary marked for first-timers) that names Tanzania. Of the 50 African safari companies whose public facts this site keeps in one table, 34 say something about a first safari; the eleven below name Tanzania in it. The camp owners most often named for Tanzania, Asilia, Nomad Tanzania, Singita and andBeyond, are not planners and are not in this table; this site compares two of them on Asilia vs Nomad Tanzania, and a planner on this page can book any of them.

How to read a card. “Not stated on their website” means the company’s pages were read and the fact is not there. “Could not access” means the page that would hold it would not open. Prices are the company’s own, per person, as printed on 12 October 2026, in the currency the page showed; nothing is converted. Reviews are shown per platform and never added together.

A first safari in Tanzania, off the main circuit: what the specialist says

The questions below were put to Pearl Jurist-Schoen, Head of Africa Sales at Extraordinary Journeys, about a route that skips the Ngorongoro Crater and the national park and stays instead in two private reserves in the Serengeti ecosystem: Mwiba Lodge in the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve and Singita Faru Faru in the Grumeti Reserve. Her answers are quoted as written.

Would you send a first-timer on this route, and what would you change for them?

“Absolutely! If a first-timer is a box-ticker who needs to see the Ngorongoro Crater and a river crossing, this route isn’t for them. But for someone who wants solitude, privacy, and an amazing, dynamic wilderness experience, it’s a great fit.”

Pearl Jurist-Schoen, Head of Africa Sales, Extraordinary Journeys, written answers to Uncompromised Travel, October 2026

Which month would you choose for a first safari in Tanzania, and why?

“For an itinerary like this, you’re mostly considering weather, not crowds, because these are private areas with caps on the number of beds, and therefore on visitors and vehicles. July to October offers the best weather. Game viewing at Mwiba tends to be strongest in February and March, but the activities there are so spectacular that it’s well worth visiting outside that ‘best for wildlife’ window.”

Why Mwiba and Singita Faru Faru for the Serengeti part of the trip?

“Exclusivity, privacy, and luxury. There are very few private game reserves in the Serengeti ecosystem, and these camps are in two of them. While the migration passing through the Mwiba and Grumeti reserves is fleeting and hard to predict, the overall experience is incredible: beautiful scenery; lots of activities you can’t do in the national park (conservation, cultural, walking, and other active pursuits), and very few other visitors. The accommodation, service, and guiding are also exceptional.”

A fly-camp on the escarpment at Mwiba: one of the activities a private reserve allows that a national park does not. Photo: Legendary Expeditions, Mwiba Lodge, used with permission.

What’s the most common mistake in the plans first-timers bring you?

“Focusing too much on a river crossing. The only guarantee when looking for a river crossing is that you’ll encounter lots of other vehicles. Of course, you can get lucky, but it’s rare. That said, we would always include a private vehicle for maximum flexibility (namely, the ability to leave a crossing site if it gets too busy), and a first-timer might not mind the crowds anyway. In most cases, they’re quite happy. It’s often on their second safari that they really appreciate what true solitude and exclusivity mean!”

What would you tell a friend before their first safari in Tanzania that most websites leave out?

“This itinerary includes only camps in private reserves, which have flexible rules around activities built in. There are walking zones and ways to get out of the vehicle in Serengeti National Park, but they’re few and far between, and you need an expert to find them. Logistics are key: driving vs. flying, open vs. closed vehicles, and where you can and can’t walk or go off-road.”

The itinerary we feature: Private Great Migration safari

Arusha, Little Chem Chem between Tarangire and Lake Manyara, Mwiba Lodge in the southern Serengeti ecosystem and Singita Faru Faru in the Grumeti Reserve, in that order: every night in a private concession. Suggested duration 12 days, from $25,000 per person, as published on Extraordinary Journeys’ itinerary page (read 14 October 2026). The page prints no inclusions list beside the price, so ask for one in writing; the day plan below is summarised from that page, and the camps named are the ones it names.

Private Great Migration safariExtraordinary Journeys · 12 days · from $25,000 per person

Day 1
Arusha, Legendary Lodge. Arrival at a garden cottage on a working coffee estate under Mount Meru, dinner delivered to the cottage.
Days 2 to 4
Tarangire and Lake Manyara, Little Chem Chem. A six-tent camp in a private wildlife corridor between the two parks, with an exclusive-use vehicle: private drives, walking safaris, a night drive, a bush breakfast under a 3,000-year-old baobab, a Maasai village, a photography hide and sundowners on a treetop deck.
Days 5 to 7
Southern Serengeti, Mwiba Lodge. Tents above the Arugusinyai River in a private concession with few other guests. A private guide and vehicle, packed lunches for full days on the plains, calving-season herds in spring, and a morning with Hadzabe hunter-gatherers or an afternoon in a Datoga village.
Days 8 to 11
Grumeti Reserve, Singita Faru Faru. A suite over a waterhole in a private concession beside the national park. An exclusive-use vehicle to follow the migration or a cheetah hunt at your own pace, a walking safari, a hot-air balloon flight, a visit to the anti-poaching observation post over Grumeti’s 350,000 acres, and a night game drive.
Day 12
Kilimanjaro International Airport. A last sunrise and breakfast, a farewell song from the staff, and the flight from a remote airstrip to Kilimanjaro for the journey home.
Who it is for
In the company’s words: “travelers who want a refined safari in a private wilderness where the only crowds are dazzles of zebra”, who want small camps but “don’t want to compromise on infinity pools and esteemed wine lists”.
Make it yours
The page offers a Maasai-escorted bush run, a Lake Natron helicopter fly-over, or two nights at Singita Sabora in Grumeti as add-ons.

The company this page features, then the alternatives

Extraordinary Journeys comes first because the itinerary above is its route and its specialist answered the questions; its facts were read the same way as everyone else’s. The ten alternatives follow in alphabetical order. Every fact is from the company’s own website or the named review platform, read on 12 October 2026, and each card ends with the limits the company itself publishes.

Three ways to choose

1. The classic circuit or the private reserves? Pearl Jurist-Schoen’s test is whether you need to tick off the Ngorongoro Crater and a river crossing. If you do, the companies that print a Northern Circuit price are Yellow Zebra (9 nights, GBP 5,461 to 6,919 per person), Thomson Safaris (8 days from $7,690 per adult) and Rhino Africa (10 days, $8,622 per person sharing). If you want solitude and the activities a national park cannot allow (walking, fly-camping, off-road driving, cultural visits), the private reserves are the answer: Extraordinary Journeys prices its 12-day private-reserve route from $25,000 per person, and its guidance for Tanzania is $1,000 to $1,500 per person per night in peak season with the top properties up to $4,200; Go2Africa’s guideline range for Tanzania is $770 to $3,300 per person per night.

2. Who guides, and is the vehicle yours? Thomson Safaris names its own Tanzanian guides, with a minimum of ten years’ experience; Africa Adventure Company names the naturalist guides it selects for its private Tanzania trips; Micato’s own Safari Directors accompany every safari. The rest use the camps’ guides, with a private guide on request. None of the eleven guarantees a private vehicle on every trip: Micato’s Private Classic and Custom safaris are private, Africa Adventure Company’s Wilds of Tanzania is a private safari with its own guide and vehicle, and everyone else offers one at a cost, subject to availability. Pearl Jurist-Schoen’s advice is to insist on one if there is any chance you will go looking for a river crossing, so you can leave when it gets busy.

3. Which month? July to October for weather, in her words. Mwiba’s own best wildlife months are February and March, when the migration herds calve on the southern plains; the river crossings in the north are usually July to October and are the most crowded weeks in the national park. The Great Migration month by month page sets out where the herds usually are.

A first safari in Tanzania: the questions people ask

Which safari company is best for a first safari in Tanzania?

Extraordinary Journeys is the company this page features: its Private Great Migration safari (12 days, from $25,000 per person; Little Chem Chem, Mwiba Lodge, Singita Faru Faru, every night in a private reserve) is the route its specialist would send a first-timer on who wants solitude rather than the Crater and a river crossing. On what the companies publish, read 12 October 2026, ten other companies name Tanzania in their first-safari guidance, and six print a Tanzania price: Yellow Zebra Safaris (Northern Circuit, 9 nights, GBP 5,461 to 6,919 per person, "the perfect introduction to Tanzania"), Thomson Safaris (Essential Tanzania Safari for "first-time and seasoned safari-goers alike"; Highlights 8 days from $7,690 per adult), Rhino Africa (Tanzania Revealed, 10 days, $8,622 per person sharing), Mahlatini (Tanzania family safari and beach, 9 nights, $8,700 per person including flights), Micato Safaris (Tanzania Spectacular, 10 days, from $20,700) and Go2Africa (Kenya and Tanzania migration safari, EUR 11,585 to 19,220). Africa Adventure Company, African Portfolio, Piper & Heath and Steppes Travel publish guidance without a priced Tanzania trip. The page gives no score.

What are the best alternatives to Extraordinary Journeys for a first safari in Tanzania?

On what they publish (read 12 October 2026), the closest alternatives are Yellow Zebra Safaris (a Your First Safari guide and a Northern Circuit trip it calls "the perfect introduction to Tanzania", 9 nights, GBP 5,461 to 6,919 per person; ATOL 10614), Thomson Safaris (Essential Tanzania Safari for "first-time and seasoned safari-goers alike", its own Tanzanian guides, Highlights 8 days from $7,690 per adult) and Mahlatini (First-Time Safari Guide; Tanzania family safari and beach 9 nights $8,700 per person including flights). Go2Africa, Rhino Africa and Micato publish first-safari guidance with a priced Tanzania trip too. Extraordinary Journeys' route is the one on this page built entirely in private reserves, which is the choice its specialist makes for a first-timer who does not need the Crater or a river crossing.

Should a first safari in Tanzania include the Ngorongoro Crater and a river crossing?

Only if you need to tick them off, in Pearl Jurist-Schoen's words. A first-timer who wants "solitude, privacy, and an amazing, dynamic wilderness experience" is well served by a route through private reserves such as Mwiba and Grumeti instead. Her most common correction to first-timers' plans is "focusing too much on a river crossing": the only guarantee at a crossing is "lots of other vehicles".

What is the best month for a first safari in Tanzania?

July to October for the best weather, according to Pearl Jurist-Schoen. In private reserves with capped bed numbers, crowds are not the issue they are in the national park. Mwiba's game viewing is strongest in February and March, when the migration herds are on the southern plains.

Why stay in a private reserve such as Mwiba or Grumeti rather than Serengeti National Park?

"Exclusivity, privacy, and luxury," in Pearl Jurist-Schoen's words: "lots of activities you can't do in the national park (conservation, cultural, walking, and other active pursuits), and very few other visitors." Walking zones exist in the national park but are "few and far between, and you need an expert to find them".

How much does a first safari in Tanzania cost?

From the companies' own prices on 12 October 2026: Yellow Zebra GBP 5,461 to 6,919 per person for 9 nights on the Northern Circuit; Thomson Safaris from $7,690 per adult for 8 days; Rhino Africa $8,622 per person sharing for 10 days; Mahlatini $8,700 per person for 9 nights including flights; Micato from $20,700 per person for 10 days; Extraordinary Journeys from $25,000 per person for 12 days in private reserves. Per-night guidance: Go2Africa $770 to $3,300; Extraordinary Journeys $1,000 to $1,500 in peak season, top properties up to $4,200, and it does not advise going below $1,000.

Do I need a private vehicle on a first safari in Tanzania?

Extraordinary Journeys "would always include a private vehicle for maximum flexibility", chiefly so you can leave a crossing site when it gets busy. None of the companies on this page guarantees one on every trip: Micato's Private Classic and Custom safaris are private (a private vehicle is optional on its Classic Safaris), Africa Adventure Company's Wilds of Tanzania is a private safari with its own guide and vehicle, and the others offer one at a cost, subject to availability.

Which companies have their own guides in Tanzania?

Thomson Safaris names its own Tanzanian guides (minimum ten years' experience) on its Safari Guides page; Micato Safaris' own Safari Directors accompany every safari; Africa Adventure Company names the naturalist guides it selects for private Tanzania trips. Extraordinary Journeys, Go2Africa, Yellow Zebra, African Portfolio and Piper & Heath use the camps' guides, with a private guide on request; Mahlatini and Rhino Africa do not state who employs their guides; Steppes Travel's group tours are led by named experts and its bespoke trips use camp guides.

What does a first-timer get wrong about logistics in Tanzania?

"Logistics are key: driving vs. flying, open vs. closed vehicles, and where you can and can't walk or go off-road," says Pearl Jurist-Schoen. Closed vehicles are the norm on driving circuits; open vehicles, walking and off-road driving are features of private reserves and concessions.

Is Zanzibar a good add-on to a first safari in Tanzania?

Mahlatini, Yellow Zebra and Africa Odyssey all publish Tanzania family or first-time itineraries that end in Zanzibar; Mahlatini's 9-night Tanzania safari and beach is priced at $8,700 per person including flights.

Can a company pay to be on this page?

No. A company is on this page because its own website publishes first-safari guidance that names Tanzania. Extraordinary Journeys is shown first because the page features its itinerary and its specialist; its facts are read the same way as everyone else's, and no company has paid for how its facts read. There are no affiliate links and no score.

This page gives no score and no ranking. Extraordinary Journeys, whose itinerary and specialist the page features, is shown first; the alternatives are alphabetical. A company is included if its own website publishes first-safari guidance that names Tanzania. Extraordinary Journeys is a paid partner of this site; it is included by the same rule and with its facts read the same way as every other company, and partners pay for labelled placement, never for how their facts read. There are no affiliate links. Facts read 12 October 2026 from each company's own website and booking terms, the Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler lists, Google, Trustpilot and SafariBookings. Pearl Jurist-Schoen's answers were given in writing to this site in October 2026 and are quoted unedited.
