What does ATOL protection mean?
By Richard Jasinski·Updated 4 November 2026
ATOL is the UK Civil Aviation Authority's financial protection for package trips that include a flight, sold in the UK. This page sets out what it covers, from the scheme's own website. It lists 38 companies in the Uncompromised Travel tables whose own websites say they hold an ATOL.
What does ATOL protection mean?
ATOL is financial protection for package trips with a flight sold by UK firms. If the firm fails you can claim your money back, or carry on with your trip and be brought home. It is not travel insurance. A flight bought with an e-ticket issued at once is not covered.

ATOL protection: the questions people ask
Does ATOL cover a holiday without a flight?
No. ATOL covers trips that include a flight. ABTA's own guidance says a UK package without a flight may be protected by a bond to ABTA or another approved body, a failure insurance policy or a trust account instead.
Is ATOL the same as travel insurance?
No. The scheme's own website says ATOL is financial protection if the firm fails, not travel insurance. ATOL itself does not cover flight cancellations or the quality of service; the CAA adds that package travel rules give a refund if the flight in an ATOL-protected package is cancelled.
When should I get my ATOL Certificate?
As soon as you pay anything, even a deposit. The certificate is your proof that the trip is ATOL protected.
What happens if an ATOL holder fails while I am away?
The scheme can bring you home and pay back money you spend replacing ATOL-protected parts of the trip; before you travel, you can claim your money back.
How do I check an ATOL number?
Use the CAA's search at atol.org/check-for-atol/, by firm name or ATOL number. ATOL holders must show the ATOL logo and their four- or five-digit number.
Do companies outside the UK hold an ATOL?
Each card gives what the company's own website says, so check the number on the CAA register before you pay.
Is my flight-only booking ATOL protected?
Usually not. ATOL covers some flight-only bookings where the ticket is not issued straight away. Your travel company should tell you before you book.
Is any company on this page paying to be here?
No. A company is on this page because its own website states the scheme; none paid to be listed and none is a partner of Uncompromised Travel.
