What financial protection do I have if my safari company goes bust?

By Richard Jasinski·Updated 4 November 2026

Your protection depends on where you book and what the company holds. A UK package with a flight is protected by ATOL; without a flight, by a bond, insurance or a trust account. SATSA says its members are bonded and KATO says the same, each only if a member goes into involuntary liquidation. This page sets out each scheme, from its own website. It lists 48 safari companies in the Uncompromised Travel tables that state how payments are protected.

What financial protection do I have if my safari company goes bust?

If your safari company goes bust, you are protected only by what it holds: ATOL for a UK package with a flight; a bond, insurance or a trust account for a UK package without one; a trust account the company states; an ABTOT bond; or a trade bond such as SATSA's in South Africa, which is limited and partial, or KATO's in Kenya, whose page gives no amount. Many local operators state none, so ask before you pay.

Which safari companies say how your payments are protected?

48 safari companies in the Uncompromised Travel tables state on their own websites how guest payments are protected if they fail; each card names the scheme.

Who is on this page and why. Uncompromised Travel holds four tables of travel companies: luxury tour operators, safari planners, safari camp owners and local safari operators, each read from the company's own website. This page carries every company in the safari planners, safari camp owners and local safari operators tables whose own website says how guest payments are protected if it fails: ATOL, ABTA, ABTOT, SATSA or KATO bonding, a trust account, Trust My Travel or insurance: 48 companies. Each card says what the company's own website says, with the page and the day it was read. A scheme named here is what the company states; check it with the scheme before you pay. No company paid to be on this page.

Safari money protection: the questions people ask

Does ATOL cover a safari?

Only a package that includes a flight, sold by a UK firm. A safari booked without a flight is not covered by ATOL.

What protects a safari without a flight booked in the UK?

ABTA's guidance says the firm may protect a UK package without a flight with a bond to ABTA or another approved body, a failure insurance policy or a trust account.

Does the SATSA bond cover me?

SATSA says its fund deals with losses by members or their customers when a member goes into involuntary liquidation. It is a limited fund for partial reimbursement, capped at R150,000 per incident and R900,000 for all incidents. Members must be in good standing to claim.

What is the KATO bond?

The Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) says its bond is compulsory for all members and applies only when a member goes into involuntary liquidation. It does not cover voluntary liquidation or fraud. The page gives no amount.

Does TATO membership protect my money?

TATO's membership page mentions no bond or financial protection for travellers.

What is Trust My Travel?

A payment service some companies name; the card shows what each company's own website says about it.

Should I pay a local safari operator by card?

Paying by credit card can let you dispute charges for services not delivered; ask the company how your deposit is held.

Are safari companies not on this page unprotected?

Not necessarily. This page lists only those whose own websites state a protection. Ask any other company how your money is protected before you pay.

Is any company on this page paying to be here?

No. A company is on this page because its own website states the scheme; none paid to be listed and none is a partner of Uncompromised Travel.

Built to answer the question in the main heading. What is shown: what each scheme's own website says (read on 4 November 2026) and what each company's own website says about the scheme, read on the day shown on its card, from the Uncompromised Travel tables. Companies are grouped by table, then in alphabetical order. No company on this page is a partner of Uncompromised Travel. How this site earns · How we work.
