Which Safari Company Is Best for a Multi-Generational Family Safari in Kenya? Ten Companies Compared on What They Publish, with the Specialist's Own Advice

By Richard Jasinski·Updated 14 October 2026

Ten safari companies publish a multi-generational safari product and plan Kenya, and only one of them, Extraordinary Journeys, publishes a priced Kenya itinerary built for grandparents, parents and children together: its Multi-generational private safari in Kenya, 14 days, from $17,000 per person, with exclusive-use vehicles and a private guide. Mahlatini has a dedicated multi-generational page and prices Kenya family trips from $8,200 per person including flights; Discover Africa Safaris lists a Multi-Generational Safaris category of 21 itineraries and Kenya trips from $2,170; Scott Dunn, Steppes Travel, Cazenove+Loyd, Expert Africa, Go2Africa, Original Travel and Wander Africa name multi-generational travel as a product without a Kenya price. This page gives no score. Each company is shown with what its own website says, where it says it and the date it was read, and the planning advice comes from Elizabeth Gordon, the chief executive of Extraordinary Journeys, who answered this site’s questions in writing.

Who is on this page, and why

A company is on this page if its own website names a multi-generational safari product (a page, a category, a holiday type or a priced itinerary) and lists Kenya among the countries it plans. Of the 50 African safari companies whose public facts this site keeps in one table, 36 mention multi-generational travel somewhere; the ten below are the ones that have turned it into a product a buyer can find and ask for. Companies that only mention it in passing (Aardvark Safaris, Journeys by Design, Kensington Tours, Micato Safaris, Timbuktu Travel, Thomson Safaris and others) are not on the page, which says nothing about whether they could plan such a trip.

How to read a card. “Not stated on their website” means the company’s pages were read and the fact is not there. “Could not access” means the page that would hold it would not open. Prices are the company’s own, per person, as printed on 12 October 2026; a “from” price with no inclusions list is just that. Reviews are shown per platform and never added together.

Three generations in Kenya: what the specialist says

The questions below were put to Elizabeth Gordon, chief executive of Extraordinary Journeys, who is listed on the Travel + Leisure A-List 2026 for family and multi-generational safaris. Her answers are quoted as written; nothing has been added to them.

Why Kenya for three generations, rather than Tanzania or southern Africa?

“I love Kenya for its wildlife, but just as much for its people and culture. In the private conservancies, the land belongs to the Samburu and Maasai, and spending time with them is part of the trip, from walking with Samburu guides to learning spear throwing or visiting a village. That gives a family plenty of options: a ten-year-old can be out doing something while a grandparent watches the wildlife from camp, and everyone meets again at dinner. Kenya also tends to require less moving around than Tanzania, which makes it easier on everyone’s body. I’d send a family to South Africa if avoiding malaria medication is non-negotiable. Otherwise, Kenya would be my first choice.”

Elizabeth Gordon, CEO, Extraordinary Journeys, written answers to Uncompromised Travel, October 2026

Why a private mobile camp in the Mara rather than a lodge?

“Because it’s built around your family rather than the other way around. A mobile camp goes up where your guide wants to be, with exactly the tents you need, arranged how you want them. Then it’s just your family, canvas and the Mara. For a big family, it’s often the most relaxed way to experience a safari.”

How do you plan a day so a ten-year-old and a grandparent both get what they came for?

“The key is flexibility. On a private trip, everyone can head off in a different direction during the day, whether that’s a bike ride for the kids or an afternoon by the pool for the grandparents, and then come back together for dinner.”

What do families get wrong when they plan a trip like this themselves?

“Moving too often. Two nights per camp means half the trip is airstrips and packing, and it feels like you’ve barely arrived before you’re packing again. We aim for three or four nights per camp for families. Also, don’t be afraid to tell the camp what you need. Camps tend to default to game drives, but most will happily arrange a gentle walk for a grandparent, an early dinner for the kids, or a morning off from the vehicle altogether. They just need to know who’s coming and what each person enjoys, and the more they know in advance, the more they can do.”

What do you know that most families don’t?

“What really sets Kenya apart, even more than the wildlife, is the people. One family we sent this summer told us their days at Kalepo with the Samburu guides, playing games and visiting the village and the blacksmith, were the most memorable part of the whole trip. That’s very Kenya. Many of the best camps are family homes, and in our experience the hosts are what guests talk about a year later. Also, book early. The best camps in Kenya are small, so you’ll need to lock in dates further ahead than you expect, often more than a year out for summer holidays.”

The route her team built for three generations, Nairobi, a private mobile camp in the Maasai Mara, Kalepo Camp in the Matthews Range and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, is set out day by day in the next section.

The itinerary we feature: Multi-generational private safari in Kenya

Nairobi, a private mobile camp in the Maasai Mara, Kalepo Camp in the Matthews Range and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, in that order. Suggested duration 14 days, from $17,000 per person, as published on Extraordinary Journeys’ itinerary page (read 14 October 2026). The page prints no inclusions list beside the price, so ask for one in writing; the day plan below is summarised from that page, and the camps named are the ones it names.

Multi-generational private safari in KenyaExtraordinary Journeys · 14 days · from $17,000 per person

Days 1 to 2
Nairobi. Arrival with VIP assistance and a private driver to Eden, a three-bedroom cottage in a leafy suburb that was once an artist’s home. Day two is a soft landing: a hands-on regenerative food tour at Brown’s Food Co (microscopes, cheese, milking cows, ice cream) and Banana Hill Gallery.
Days 3 to 6
Maasai Mara, private mobile camp. A canvas camp by Everwild Africa pitched for your family alone, with custom tents, en-suite bathrooms and private verandas. Game drives are guided by Finlay Marrian, Nairobi-born, who tailors each day: tracking lions all morning, or binoculars and sketchbooks in camp. Kids read tracks and map stars; grandparents get “a considered safari experience that moves at a thoughtful pace”.
Days 7 to 9
Matthews Range, Kalepo Camp. Charter flight to an exclusive-use camp on 390,000 private acres, hosted by Storm and Rob Mason. The vehicle is parked and the exploring is on foot with Samburu guides, “scaled for little legs and active grandparents”; village visits that are not staged; mountain biking, hiking, birding, beading by the pool and Warrior Games for the children. Meals are family-style with produce from the garden.
Days 10 to 13
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Charter via Reteti Elephant Sanctuary to a private house of five thatched cottages on the Craig family’s land, with Mount Kenya on the horizon. A private guide and vehicle “ready when you are”; black and white rhino; a visit to conservancy headquarters, the rangers and the anti-poaching dog unit; a day on foot, on horseback or by camel, with Maasai games, cave paintings and crab fishing in the springs.
Day 14
Nairobi. A final morning game drive, a flight to Nairobi, a private driver for shopping, an optional day room, and a send-off dinner at Cultiva before the flight home.
Who it is for
In the company’s words: “Designed for families writing shared family memories across generations. We’ve considered both grade-schoolers and grandparents, scaling activities to ensure everyone is included.”

The company this page features, then the alternatives

Extraordinary Journeys comes first because the itinerary above is its route and its specialist answered the questions; its facts were read the same way as everyone else’s. The nine alternatives follow in alphabetical order. Every fact is from the company’s own website or the named review platform, read on 12 October 2026, and each card ends with the limits the company itself publishes.

Three ways to choose

1. Do you want the trip already designed and priced for three generations? Only Extraordinary Journeys publishes one for Kenya (14 days, from $17,000 per person, exclusive-use vehicles and a private guide). Mahlatini publishes Kenya family itineraries with guide prices including flights (6 nights from $8,200) and a separate multi-generational page; Discover Africa Safaris publishes a 21-itinerary multi-generational category and the lowest Kenya entry prices on this page (4 days from $2,170). The other seven will design the trip from scratch, which is the normal way a tailor-made company works, but you will not see a price before you enquire.

2. Does anyone in the party need a private vehicle, a gentle day or a malaria-free option? None of the ten guarantees a private vehicle on every trip; Extraordinary Journeys and Mahlatini include one on their named family itineraries, and the rest offer it at a cost. Expert Africa recommends children of “about eight and above”; Mahlatini and Extraordinary Journeys say six and up for most camps, with walking, canoeing and gorilla trekking carrying higher minimums everywhere. If a grandparent cannot take malaria tablets, Elizabeth Gordon’s own answer is South Africa, not Kenya; Mahlatini and Extraordinary Journeys both publish malaria-free South Africa family trips.

3. How is your money protected? The UK companies publish a scheme you can check: Expert Africa (ATOL 5206, ABTOT 5715), Mahlatini (ATOL 7316, Travel Trust Association U7098), Scott Dunn (ATOL 2471, ABTOT 5222), Steppes Travel (ATOL 6945, ABTOT 5488), Original Travel (ATOL 5922, ABTA Y5632) and Cazenove+Loyd (ATOL 3208 for flight-inclusive packages). Go2Africa publishes a money-back guarantee against supplier failure of up to $30,000 per person and SATSA bonding. Extraordinary Journeys, Discover Africa Safaris and Wander Africa name no scheme. The full comparison is on the payment terms page.

Book early. Every camp named on this page is small: Kalepo has a handful of tents, and the Mara conservancy camps and private mobile camps are sized for one party. Elizabeth Gordon’s advice is to lock in summer-holiday dates more than a year out. The page on what a Kenya safari costs has the per-night ranges by camp tier.

Multi-generational safaris in Kenya: the questions people ask

Which safari company is best for a multi-generational family safari in Kenya?

On what the companies publish, read 12 October 2026, Extraordinary Journeys is the only company with a priced Kenya itinerary designed for grandparents, parents and children together (Multi-generational private safari in Kenya, 14 days, from $17,000 per person, exclusive-use vehicles and a private guide). Mahlatini has a dedicated multi-generational page and Kenya family trips from $8,200 per person including flights; Discover Africa Safaris has a 21-itinerary multi-generational category and Kenya trips from $2,170. Scott Dunn, Steppes Travel, Cazenove+Loyd, Expert Africa, Go2Africa, Original Travel and Wander Africa name multi-generational travel as a product without publishing a Kenya price. The page gives no score; which fits depends on whether you want a designed trip or a blank sheet, who needs a private vehicle, and how you want your money protected.

What are the best alternatives to Extraordinary Journeys for a multi-generational safari in Kenya?

On what they publish (read 12 October 2026), the closest alternatives are Mahlatini (dedicated multi-generational page; Kenya family trips from $8,200 per person including flights; ATOL 7316), Discover Africa Safaris (a 21-itinerary multi-generational category; Kenya from $2,170 per person) and Scott Dunn (a Multi-Generational Holidays range; Iconic Kenya 10 nights from GBP 7,300). Expert Africa, Go2Africa, Steppes Travel, Cazenove+Loyd, Original Travel and Wander Africa name multi-generational travel as a product without a Kenya price. Extraordinary Journeys remains the only one with a priced Kenya itinerary designed for three generations.

Why do specialists recommend Kenya for a three-generation safari?

Elizabeth Gordon of Extraordinary Journeys gives three reasons: in the private conservancies the land belongs to the Samburu and Maasai, so time with them (walking with guides, spear throwing, village visits) gives a ten-year-old something to do while a grandparent watches wildlife from camp; Kenya needs less moving around than Tanzania, which is easier on older bodies; and many of the best camps are family homes whose hosts guests remember a year later. She would send a family to South Africa instead only if avoiding malaria medication is non-negotiable.

How many nights per camp should a family safari in Kenya have?

Three or four nights per camp, according to Extraordinary Journeys, which says two nights per camp means half the trip is airstrips and packing. Its published multi-generational Kenya itinerary runs 14 days.

What is a private mobile camp, and why use one for a big family?

A camp that is put up where the guide wants to be, with exactly the tents the family needs, arranged how the family wants them, and taken down afterwards. Elizabeth Gordon calls it "often the most relaxed way to experience a safari" for a big family because it is built around the party rather than the other way round.

What is the minimum age for children on a Kenya safari?

There is no national minimum; each camp sets its own. Extraordinary Journeys recommends waiting until children are six to eight and says some camps set a minimum of 12; Expert Africa recommends about eight and above but has taken children as young as four or five; Mahlatini says many camps have minimum ages and recommends lodges by age band. Walking safaris usually carry a minimum of 12, 14 or 16 depending on the camp.

Which of these companies includes a private vehicle and guide?

None guarantees one on every trip. Extraordinary Journeys includes exclusive-use vehicles and a private guide on its multi-generational Kenya itinerary; Mahlatini lists a private vehicle and guide as included on specific family itineraries. Discover Africa Safaris, Expert Africa, Go2Africa and the others offer a private vehicle at extra cost or on request. A private vehicle is what lets a party split up by day, so ask for it to be written into the quote.

How much does a multi-generational safari in Kenya cost?

From the companies' own prices on 12 October 2026: Discover Africa Safaris from $2,170 per person for a 4-day Masai Mara safari; Mahlatini Kenya Family Safari Holiday 6 nights from $8,200 per person including flights; Scott Dunn Iconic Kenya 10 nights from GBP 7,300 per person; Steppes Travel Kenya Chronicles family safari from GBP 6,995 per person; Cazenove+Loyd Kenya from GBP 10,275 per person; Extraordinary Journeys Multi-generational private safari in Kenya 14 days from $17,000 per person. Per-night guidance: Extraordinary Journeys about $1,000 per person; Go2Africa $770 to $3,400; Discover Africa $445 to $2,250.

Should a family with a grandparent go to Kenya or South Africa?

Kenya, unless someone cannot take malaria medication, in which case South Africa's malaria-free reserves are the answer, in Elizabeth Gordon's words. Mahlatini and Extraordinary Journeys both publish malaria-free South Africa family itineraries (Mahlatini Family Cape and Malaria-Free Safari 10 nights $7,200; Extraordinary Journeys Malaria-free safari in South Africa 11 days $12,000).

How far ahead should a Kenya family safari be booked?

More than a year out for summer holidays, according to Extraordinary Journeys, because the best Kenya camps are small. African Portfolio's first-safari guide, read for a related page, suggests planning 12 to 18 months ahead.

Can a company pay to be on this page?

No. A company is on this page because its own website names a multi-generational safari product and lists Kenya among the countries it plans. Extraordinary Journeys is shown first because the page features its itinerary and its specialist; its facts are read the same way as everyone else's, and no company has paid for how its facts read. There are no affiliate links and no score.

This page gives no score and no ranking. Extraordinary Journeys, whose itinerary and specialist the page features, is shown first; the alternatives are alphabetical. A company is included if its own website names a multi-generational safari product and lists Kenya among the countries it plans. Extraordinary Journeys is a paid partner of this site; it is included by the same rule and with its facts read the same way as every other company, and partners pay for labelled placement, never for how their facts read. There are no affiliate links. Facts read 12 October 2026 from each company's own website and booking terms, the Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler lists, Google, Trustpilot and SafariBookings. Elizabeth Gordon's answers were given in writing to this site in October 2026 and are quoted unedited.
