Ranked on access, pricing, facilities, credentials and booking terms, the best luxury camps in Antarctica in 2026 are Whichaway Camp (72), Union Glacier Camp (70) and Echo Base (68). The field is small: three companies run guest camps on the continent itself, White Desert and Ultima Antarctic Expeditions from Cape Town into Queen Maud Land, and Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) from Punta Arenas into the Ellsworth Mountains. The rubric and pass mark were fixed before any camp was scored.

Score breakdown by criterion

The two White Desert camps take full marks on terms, because White Desert publishes its deposit stages, a three-step cancellation scale and a US$500,000 insurance minimum, and lose points on credentials: its pages name no medical staff and no aircraft operator. Union Glacier is the mirror image. ALE publishes the most about safety, a clinic staffed by doctors in remote medicine and the contracted operator of its ski aircraft, and the only itinerary in the field with a stated number of nights at camp, but it publishes no deposit or cancellation terms, which leaves it 3 of 15 on that criterion. Echo Base trails Whichaway only because White Desert does not publish its guest capacity. Ultima Antarctic Expeditions, with published prices for every departure, scores 50 and is assessed but not ranked.

How much does a luxury camp in Antarctica cost in 2026?

Published 2026-27 prices run from US$13,500 for Ultima's one-day expedition to US$115,500 for White Desert's South Pole and Penguins, with ALE's five-day Antarctic Odyssey at US$33,500 and Ultima's seven-day South Pole and Emperors at US$92,000. All prices are per person, and none includes the flight to Cape Town or Punta Arenas. White Desert quotes shared occupancy and prices its new Explorer Camp below Whichaway and Echo Base for the same trips.

Two cautions. ALE's price includes the flight from Punta Arenas and back and the transfers there, but excludes the hotel in Punta Arenas, insurance and any costs from a weather delay; White Desert likewise excludes flights to Cape Town and accommodation there. And the South Pole prices are not comparable day for day, because White Desert does not publish night counts on its price page. Flying to Antarctica: Cape Town or Punta Arenas

Two of the three camp operators fly from Cape Town and one from Punta Arenas: White Desert's Airbus reaches the Wolf's Fang blue-ice runway in about five and a half hours, Ultima's Ilyushin takes about six hours to Novo, and ALE's Boeing 757 reaches Union Glacier from Punta Arenas in about four and a quarter hours. All three land on blue-ice runways, which are hard enough for wheeled jets. Ski-equipped Basler BT-67 and Twin Otter aircraft take guests on from the camps to the South Pole and the emperor colonies.

The Queen Maud Land camps lie roughly south of Africa and the Ellsworth Mountains south of South America, so the gateway follows the camp. Whichever gateway you choose, the flight into the city is booked separately and is where a missed connection costs you the trip, so leave a full day's margin. Emperor penguins and the South Pole: which camp does what

All three companies sell both emperor penguins and the South Pole: White Desert from Whichaway and Echo Base, Ultima from its Oasis Camp, and ALE from Union Glacier, with emperors seen from its separate Gould Bay camp. What differs is the standard of the bed at the far end: White Desert's pods are heated with their own bathrooms, while ALE's Gould Bay camp uses unheated single mountaineering tents, field toilets and no showers.

1. Whichaway Camp, White Desert: 72/100

Six heated pods, 12 guests · Opened 2005 · US$500,000 insurance minimum

Whichaway Camp sits on the Schirmacher Oasis in Queen Maud Land (70°48'S, 11°23'E) and has run since 2005, open from November to January. It scores 16 of 20 on facilities: six heated pods for 12 guests, each with its own shower and bathroom, power points and a chef cooking with ingredients flown in weekly. Booking terms take the full 15: White Desert's terms take 25% more than 12 months out, a further 25% at 12 months and the balance five months before departure; they refund 75% on cancellation more than 12 months out, 50% between two and 12 months and nothing inside two months; and they require at least US$500,000 of medical and evacuation cover plus a medical check within 30 days of travel. Pricing scores 17: every trip is priced per person for 2026-27, from US$75,250 for Baby Penguins and Blue Tunnels to US$115,500 for the South Pole, but inclusions are not itemised and night counts are not given on the price page. The weak score is credentials, 8 of 15: White Desert is an IAATO member and ships all waste out to South Africa, but names no medical staff at camp and no aircraft operator.

Union Glacier Camp is the base for ALE's South Pole flights, Vinson climbs and last-degree ski expeditions, and it takes 21 of 25 on access, the best in the field. ALE publishes the aircraft (a 60-seat Boeing 757-200), the four-and-a-quarter-hour flight from Punta Arenas to a blue-ice runway, and the one itinerary here with a stated length on the ice: the Antarctic Odyssey, five days with three nights at Union Glacier, at US$33,500 with the Antarctic flight, meals, tents and guides included. Guests sleep two to a double-walled Clam Tent warmed by the sun to about 16°C, with shared toilets and a shower every two or three days. Credentials score 12 of 15: ALE is an IAATO member, its medical page describes a clinic staffed by doctors in emergency and remote medicine, and it names Kenn Borek Air as the operator of its ski aircraft. It is candid about the limits too: no surgery, X-ray or transfusion, and an evacuation that needs a dedicated intercontinental flight and can take several days. The weak score is booking terms, 3 of 15: ALE publishes no deposit or cancellation schedule, only that every guest carries medical evacuation insurance.

Echo Base, White Desert's second camp (71°32'S, 8°50'E), shares Whichaway's flights, prices and terms, so it takes the same 16 on access, 17 on pricing and full marks on booking terms. It scores 12 of 20 on facilities rather than 16 because White Desert publishes no guest capacity for it; the pods are heated, and their showers have floor-to-ceiling windows. The same credentials gap applies as at Whichaway (8 of 15). White Desert's camps page also lists a newer Explorer Camp nearby, priced lower (US$65,000 for Baby Penguins and Blue Tunnels, US$16,500 for Antarctica in a Day), but it publishes too little about the camp itself to score it this year.

Three camps assessed but not ranked

Three planning rules for an Antarctic camp

1 · Price the insurance before the trip. White Desert's US$500,000 medical and evacuation minimum is twice the US$250,000 that Aurora Expeditions requires for its ship voyages, and ALE warns that an evacuation from Union Glacier can take several days. 2 · Read the cancellation scale, because you will pay most of the fare a year ahead. White Desert takes half the price 12 months out and refunds nothing inside two months; ALE and Ultima publish no scale at all, so ask for it in writing before paying.

What changed for Antarctic camps in 2026

Three dated changes shape the 2026-27 camp season: Lindblad's purchase of White Desert, Ultima's full IAATO membership, and White Desert's new, cheaper Explorer Camp.

15 September 2026. Lindblad Expeditions Holdings announced a 60% stake in White Desert and Echo Charlie for about US$61 million in cash, plus about US$6 million for balance-sheet cash.

April 2025. Ultima Antarctic Expeditions became a full member of IAATO, having been a provisional member since 2023.

2026-27 season. White Desert's price list adds Explorer Camp, priced US$10,250 to US$20,500 below Whichaway and Echo Base on the same trips.
