Between Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, Vietnam is best for a first trip and needs 8 to 12 nights, Cambodia is best for temples and needs 4 to 6, and Laos is best for slowing down and needs 3 to 5; November to February is the one window when all three are at their best. Vietnam vs Cambodia vs Laos: which is best?

Vietnam is best for a first trip and for variety, Cambodia is best for temples, and Laos is best for a slow, quiet few days; most luxury itineraries combine all three in 14 to 16 days. The three share borders and a history but not an immigration system, a climate or a pace, and they reward different travellers.

How the comparison works. No scores. Each country is compared on what a traveller has to decide: how long it needs, when it is dry, what entry costs, and who it suits. Entry rules were read on 5 October 2026 and change often, so each links to the official portal. The verdicts are ours.

Laos3 to 5November to FebruaryE-visa at laoevisa.gov.la or visa on arrival, about US$40Couples, slow travel, a pause between two busier countries

The pattern is one of scale. Vietnam is 1,650 km long with three climates and a dozen places worth a stop. Cambodia's draw is concentrated at Angkor and in Phnom Penh. Laos is the smallest stage of the three, and for many travellers the one they remember. Length of stay follows from that, and so does the order: Vietnam carries the trip, Cambodia supplies its centrepiece and Laos its rest.

Which is best for a first trip to Southeast Asia?

Vietnam is the best of the three for a first trip, because ten days covers a capital, a bay, a historic town and a southern city with a short flight between each. The usual line runs north to south: Hanoi, a night or two on Ha Long or the quieter Lan Ha Bay, Hue and Hoi An in the centre, then Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.

The caution is weather. No single month is dry in all three regions: October and November bring heavy rain to Hoi An and Hue while Hanoi is at its best. A planner will bend the route to the month. Our month-by-month guide to Southeast Asia sets out the detail, and the Vietnam luxury guide covers hotels.

Which is best for temples and history?

Cambodia is the best for temples: the Angkor park outside Siem Reap needs three days, and an Angkor Pass costs US$37 for one day, US$62 for three and US$72 for seven. Passes are sold by Angkor Enterprise. Three days allows Angkor Wat at dawn, the faces of the Bayon, Ta Prohm before the coaches and one outlying temple such as Banteay Srei.

Two things have changed how the visit works. Siem Reap's international airport, opened in October 2023, is about 45 km from town, so allow an hour each way. And Phnom Penh's new Techo International Airport opened in September 2025. Laos answers with Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-listed town of monasteries on the Mekong, and Vietnam with the imperial citadel at Hue. Neither is on Angkor's scale.

Which is best for families?

For families, Vietnam with Cambodia is the strongest pairing: Vietnam for activity and beaches, Cambodia for three days at Angkor, with Laos added for teenagers who are happy to slow down. Children tend to remember what they did, so the days that work are cooking in Hoi An, kayaking in Lan Ha Bay, cycling in the Mekong Delta and exploring Ta Prohm's tree roots.

School holidays fall badly for this region. July and August are hot and wet in Cambodia, Laos and southern Vietnam, though central Vietnam's beaches are dry. Christmas and February half-term are the best family windows and need booking about nine months ahead.

How to combine Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos

A combined trip works best as Hanoi and the bay (four nights), Luang Prabang (three), Siem Reap (three), then Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta (three or four), flying each leg. That is 13 to 14 nights and four hotels. Direct flights between Luang Prabang and Siem Reap do not run every day, which is the usual reason a route is reordered. The Laos to China railway, open since December 2021, has cut Vientiane to Luang Prabang to about two hours for those who want the capital as well.

A river is the alternative thread. Mekong cruises run between the delta in Vietnam and Siem Reap in Cambodia, usually over seven nights, and replace three internal flights with one boat. At the top of the market, Remote Lands links Amanoi in Vietnam, Amantaka in Laos and Amansara in Cambodia by private jet. Our 14-day Southeast Asia itinerary gives a day-by-day version.

Who to book Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos with

Three countries, three visa systems and five or six flights are the reason most travellers use a planner here, and the questions that decide between planners are who is on the ground in each country and what the price includes. We compare the Asia specialists in Extraordinary Journeys vs Remote Lands and assess the larger houses in the Luxury Tour Operator Power Rankings.

Three planning rules for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos

1 · Fix the month, then the route. November to February is dry in Cambodia, Laos and southern Vietnam, and cool in Hanoi. Outside it, one region will be wet and the route should bend around it.

2 · Handle three sets of paperwork early. Vietnam's e-visa, Cambodia's e-visa and e-Arrival card, and Laos's e-visa are separate applications on separate sites, and Laos does not accept its e-visa at every border. Use only the official portals linked above.

3 · Fly less than the map suggests. Four bases in two weeks is enough. Each extra stop costs most of a day, and Siem Reap's airport alone adds two hours of road.

What changed in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in 2026

Four changes affect 2027 trips. Since 15 April 2026 Vietnam has required a digital arrival card from foreign passengers landing at Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City. Long Thanh, the city's new airport 40 km to the east, was scheduled to open in mid-2026, so check which airport code is on a ticket. Vietnam is also extending e-visa entry to 41 more border gates. And Cambodia now asks every visitor to complete its e-Arrival card before entry, at arrival.gov.kh.
