Go2Africa: the review volume

Go2Africa scores 89, the highest planner score on this site, on the strength of 3,118 Feefo reviews at 4.9, 14 countries sold and a full 20 of 20 for review evidence. Founded in 1998 and run from Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, it belongs to the Nawiri Group, a certified B Corp, and publishes per-person-per-night price guidelines by country and tier (South Africa mid-range from USD 920 a night in low season) alongside lodge rates such as Singita Ebony at ZAR 51,665. It states 24/7 assistance, holds RedPoint Travel Protection as a SATSA member, and carries 21 advisors on Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Top Travel Specialists list and World Travel Awards titles in 2024 and 2025 (see the award-winning safari companies page). It loses points for not naming its leaders on the About page and for pricing that guides rather than quotes a trip.

Expert Africa: the priced itinerary and the bond

Expert Africa scores 87 with the best marks of the three for expertise, pricing, service and ownership: every itinerary carries a from-price in US dollars, the owners are named, and it holds ATOL 5206 and ABTOT 5715. Founded in 1994 inside Sunvil and owner-run since a management buy-out by Chris and Susie McIntyre in late 2025, it works from Richmond in London with offices in Cape Town and Windhoek and sells 12 countries. Office hours are published, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:30 and Saturday morning, with a 24/7 emergency line. Its lowest published price is USD 2,690 for a three-day Tanzania add-on. It won Gold for safari holidays at the 2025 British Travel Awards and is on Condé Nast Traveller's 2026 UK list. Where it loses is independent review volume: 511 AITO reviews at 99% excellent or good and 6,707 on its own site, but only two on Trustpilot and no Tripadvisor or SafariBookings profile.

Africa Travel Resource: the guides' company with a closed review account

Africa Travel Resource, trading as ATR, scores 67: strong on expertise and breadth, weak on review evidence and protection. Founded in 1999 and incorporated in 2000 as ATR Safari UK Ltd (Companies House), it was started by principals who guided in Zambia's Kafue in the 1980s and now runs offices in Shere, Surrey, Franschhoek, Grosse Pointe in Michigan and Arusha. Its site lists 14 countries on the safari-locations page and 18 on the home page, prices trips as samples with a stated range of USD 2,500 to 50,000 a person and a 14-night self-drive Cape and safari sample from USD 2,550, and publishes calling hours for the UK, US, Europe and Australia. The review record is the problem: its Feefo account holds 281 reviews but is closed, with the newest from around 2020, there is no Trustpilot profile, and the Google 4.9 it quotes is on its own site rather than a platform this page could read. No ATOL or ABTOT was found on its site, which matters for a UK company selling flight-inclusive trips, and no deposit terms are published. Its address on Companies House, in Lewes, differs from the Surrey office on its site; both are current.

Booking terms and protection

None of the three publishes deposit or balance terms, so protection is the differentiator: Expert Africa is ATOL and ABTOT bonded, Go2Africa uses RedPoint Travel Protection through SATSA, and no scheme was found for ATR. For a UK buyer, Expert Africa's ATOL covers flight-inclusive packages in the way the safari award credentials index describes; Go2Africa's cover is a South African scheme; ATR should be asked directly what protects a payment. Go2Africa has the largest current record, 3,118 Feefo reviews at 4.9; Expert Africa's 511 AITO reviews run at 99% excellent or good; ATR's 281 Feefo reviews are six years old. Go2Africa also carries 4.4 from 106 on SafariBookings and 4.8 from 74 on Tripadvisor. Expert Africa's own site holds 6,707 reviews at 95% excellent, which count for less because the company hosts them. ATR's Feefo page states the company is no longer a customer, so the score shown there is not current sentiment; Tanzania and Botswana travel forums carry recent first-hand praise, which is not a rating.

The verdict, criterion by criterion

Expert Africa wins four of the six scored criteria and Go2Africa two, but Go2Africa's two are worth more points and it finishes 89 to 87; ATR wins only on the cheapest sample price.

Which to choose

Choose Go2Africa for the widest choice and the deepest current review record, Expert Africa for a priced itinerary with UK bonding and named owners, and ATR only if a conversation with its offices settles protection and terms that its site leaves out. A UK buyer paying in sterling for a flight-inclusive trip has a clear reason to start with Expert Africa. A buyer who wants to compare many camps and read thousands of recent reviews first has a clear reason to start with Go2Africa. ATR's guiding roots and regional offices are real, but a reader cannot verify them through reviews or a bond today.

Three planning rules

1 · Ask each planner for the same camps on the same dates. All three book other owners' properties, so the quotes are comparable; the specialist versus direct page explains what the planner adds.

2 · Ask what protects the money. ATOL, ABTOT or RedPoint mean different things in different countries; ATR should name a scheme before a deposit.

3 · Treat a sample price as a floor. ATR's USD 2,550 and Expert Africa's USD 2,690 exclude international flights and, in ATR's case, are illustrative; the price comparison shows what the whole field publishes.

What changed in 2026

Expert Africa changed hands, ATR changed its name, and Go2Africa added a third World Travel Awards year.
