It is the only one of nine programmes to clear the pass mark of 60. Ranked on seat time, price, cars and venue, safety and booking terms, Lapland Ice Driving (73/100) is the only ice driving programme that clears the pass mark in 2026; eight others were assessed and are not ranked. Buyers compare these on hours behind the wheel and whether they share a car, and those are exactly the figures most manufacturers leave out. Lapland Ice Driving clears the bar on terms and safety, where it takes the full 30: a named head coach, a stated licence rule, a €100,000 liability cap with the insurance deductible included, a deposit and cancellation scale, and a written plan for bad ice. It loses points on seat time, 10 of 25, because it publishes hours but not how many drivers share a car or how many instructors there are. Mercedes-AMG comes closest of the rest, with every price, car, venue and date published, but no deposit schedule or cancellation scale for customers. Porsche, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren all publish their cars and venues; none publishes a price on its own programme page. Two cautions on comparing these. A two-driver price halves the time each person drives, so the per-driver price on BMW M's Ice Pro (€11,490, one car each) buys roughly twice the wheel time of Ice Plus. And Lapland flights are a real part of the cost: BMW M and AMG fly guests into Arvidsjaur for Arjeplog, and Porsche meets them at Kittilä for Levi.
Seat time and drivers per car: what each programme publishes
Lapland Ice Driving publishes up to eight hours of driving a day and McLaren's programme is reported at up to three; Porsche, Audi, BMW M's standard tiers and Mercedes-AMG put two drivers in each car, while BMW M's Ice Pro and Porsche's Intense and Ultimate tiers give each driver more time with a car or an instructor. Where ice driving happens: Swedish Lapland, Finnish Lapland and the Alps
Five of the nine programmes run in Lapland, where frozen lakes are prepared as circuits each winter: Lapland Ice Driving, BMW M and Mercedes-AMG in Sweden, around Arjeplog for BMW M and AMG, and Porsche at Levi and Audi at Muonio in Finland, with McLaren further north at Ivalo. Ferrari and Lamborghini run in the Alps, at Courmayeur and Livigno, on shorter snow and ice tracks.

The Lapland programmes run from January to March, when the lake ice is thick enough; Audi's 2026 season ran from 19 February to 17 March and Lapland Ice Driving's 2027 season runs from 10 January to 22 March. Lapland Ice Driving runs five circuits on frozen lakes in Swedish Lapland from 10 January to 22 March 2027, with about 30 cars from Porsche, including the 911 Dakar, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Alpine, and coaching led by the four-time WTCC champion Yvan Müller. It takes the full 15 on credentials and safety: its terms ask for a French category B licence or an EEA equivalent, include the insurance deductible in the price, cap the driver's liability at €100,000, and state that the damage waiver is void for ignoring instructions or reckless driving. Booking terms also take the full 15: 50% on booking and the balance 45 days before arrival; a €200 administration fee on any cancellation, nothing more at 90 days or earlier, rising to 90% inside ten days; and, if the ice is unsuitable, sessions moved within the stay, extended, taken before 30 March or credited to the next season. Pricing scores 21, with six packages priced per driver. The weak score is seat time, 10 of 25: eight hours a day are published, but not how many drivers share a car or how many instructors are on the ice. A new LID Centre facility is announced for 2026.

Three planning rules for an ice driving course
1 · Ask how many drivers share each car. Most standard tiers put two in a car; the premium tiers that give you a car of your own cost roughly twice as much, and that is usually the real difference in seat time.
2 · Get the damage terms in writing before you drive. Lapland Ice Driving caps liability at €100,000 and voids its waiver for ignoring instructions; most programmes publish no excess at all.
3 · Book flexible flights around the ice, not the other way round. Only Lapland Ice Driving publishes what happens when the ice is not ready; build a spare day either side.

Do you get your own car on an ice driving course?
Only on some tiers. Porsche's standard Ice Performance, Audi's ice programme, BMW M's Ice Plus and Ice Max and Mercedes-AMG's Advanced Weekend put two drivers in each car. BMW M's Ice Pro gives each driver a car in a group of up to four, and Porsche's Intense and Ultimate tiers add a personal instructor. Lapland Ice Driving does not publish drivers per car.
Can anyone book the Ferrari ice driving course?
No. Ferrari's own page says the Corso Pilota on ice is reserved exclusively for Ferrari customers. The 2024 edition at Courmayeur used ten Purosangue cars for 24 guests with two instructors for each group of six.
What happens if the ice is not safe on an ice driving course?
Lapland Ice Driving's terms say sessions are rescheduled during the stay, extended, moved to before 30 March or credited to the next season. Mercedes-AMG reserves the right to cancel at short notice for weather and recommends travel insurance. The other programmes publish no weather policy on the pages checked.
What licence do you need for ice driving in Lapland?
Lapland Ice Driving asks for a French category B licence or an equivalent EEA licence. Mercedes-AMG requires drivers to be at least 18 with a class B, EU or international licence, and BMW M asks for a valid licence and fitness to drive. No previous track experience is required by BMW M or Ice Drive Sweden.
Is the McLaren Arctic Experience worth it?
McLaren's own page could not be read for this assessment, so it was not scored. Press coverage of the 2026 edition describes three days of driving a McLaren Artura at Ivalo, Finland, up to three hours a day, four nights at Jávri Lodge and a solo-driver price from £25,094 including Finnish VAT.
