The world's largest Gothic cathedral by volume — built on the site of a 12th-century Almohad mosque, completed in 1506. UNESCO World Heritage. Christopher Columbus's tomb is here, suspended on the shoulders of four allegorical kings. La Giralda — the cathedral's bell tower — was originally the mosque's minaret, with a 35-ramp interior climb (designed for horsemen, not stairs). The view from the top is among the best in the city. Three ticket options above: standalone Cathedral + Giralda, or combined with the Alcázar.

What travellers are saying

Travellers consistently call the Cathedral one of the most impressive interiors in Spain — particularly those who climb the Giralda for the panoramic view. Most-cited positives: Columbus's tomb, the Giralda climb (the ramps make it accessible to nearly everyone), and the scale of the interior. Most-cited issue: travellers without skip-the-line tickets queueing 45-60 minutes in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Giralda climbed by ramps instead of stairs?

Because it was originally built as an Almohad mosque's minaret in 1198, designed so the muezzin could ride a horse to the top to call prayers — five times a day, every day. When the cathedral was built on the mosque's site after the Christian reconquest, the minaret was kept and converted to a bell tower. The ramps are still there. There are 35 of them.

Is Christopher Columbus actually buried in Seville Cathedral?

Probably yes — DNA analysis in 2006 confirmed the bones in the tomb are Columbus's, settling a centuries-long debate. His remains travelled extensively after his death (Spain → Dominican Republic → Cuba → Spain), which is why some still claim Santo Domingo also has his bones. The Seville tomb shows him being held aloft by four allegorical kings representing the kingdoms of Castile, Aragón, León and Navarra.

How long does the Cathedral and Giralda visit take?

Allow 90 minutes minimum: 60 minutes for the cathedral interior and 30 minutes for the Giralda climb (including queue at the base of the tower). Audio guides extend this to 2 hours. Add 30 minutes if you want to see the Patio de los Naranjos (orange tree courtyard, originally the mosque's ablutions courtyard).

Should I do the Cathedral standalone or combined with the Alcázar?

Combined is better value for most travellers — the Cathedral and Alcázar are 3 minutes' walk apart and almost everyone visits both the same day. Combined tickets save money vs buying separately and lock in skip-the-line access at both. Standalone Cathedral only makes sense if you're visiting the Alcázar on a different day or skipping it entirely.

Is the Giralda climb suitable for all ages?

Yes — the ramped climb is one of the most accessible tower climbs in Europe. No stairs, gentle gradient, plenty of stops along the way. Children, older travellers, and those with mobility issues can usually manage it. The platform at the top is enclosed but has open viewing windows.
