Things to Do in Palawan: El Nido, Coron & the Underground River

Palawan, Philippines · Updated June 2026 · By Richard J.

Palawan is the Philippines' show-stopper — a long, thin island repeatedly voted among the most beautiful in the world, where limestone karst towers rise straight out of impossibly clear water. It's really three trips in one: El Nido for the island-hopping, Coron for the lagoons and wreck diving, and Puerto Princesa for the UNESCO Underground River. Distances are large and the logistics matter — this is our shortlist and how to structure it.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Palawan?

At least a week to do it justice, and even then you'll focus on two bases rather than all three. El Nido plus Coron over seven to ten days is the classic combination; add Puerto Princesa and the Underground River if you have more time. Don't underestimate the transfer times.

What's the difference between El Nido and Coron?

El Nido is about island-hopping through dramatic lagoons and beaches on lettered boat tours; it's livelier and easier to reach. Coron is quieter, with its own stunning lagoons plus world-class WWII wreck diving. Many travellers do both, linked by ferry or a short flight.

How do you get to Palawan?

Fly into Puerto Princesa (PPS) for the south and the Underground River, El Nido (ENI) for the north, or Busuanga/Coron (USU) for Coron. There's no single hub, so plan flights around which areas you want — that choice shapes the whole trip.

Do you need to book the Underground River in advance?

Yes. The Puerto Princesa Underground River has a daily visitor cap and requires a permit, which organised tours handle for you. In peak season slots go quickly, so book ahead rather than risk turning up without one.

When is the best time to visit Palawan?

December to March for the calmest seas and clearest water — ideal for island-hopping and diving, but also the busiest and priciest. April–May is a hot, drier shoulder. June–November is wet, cheaper and quieter, but boat trips are weather-dependent.
