Things to Do in Boracay: The Philippines' White Beach Island

Boracay, Philippines · Updated June 2026 · By Richard J.

Boracay is the Philippines' most famous beach — a four-kilometre arc of powder-white sand so loved it was nearly destroyed, closed by the government for six months in 2018, and reopened cleaner and better managed. Today it's the country's most polished beach-resort island: White Beach at its heart, a sunset-sail tradition, island-hopping and water sports, and nightlife that's still lively but no longer lawless. This is our shortlist of what's worth booking.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Boracay?

Three to four days is plenty for White Beach, a sunset sail, an island-hopping trip and some water sports. It's a small island built for relaxing, so add days for pure beach time rather than more sights.

How do you get to Boracay?

Boracay has no airport of its own. Fly into Caticlan (MPH, closest) or Kalibo (KLO, cheaper, ~90 min away), then take the short jetty boat across. Transfers that bundle the van and boat are the smoothest way to arrive.

When is the best time to visit Boracay?

November to April is the dry season and the best time — calm White Beach water and reliable sun. December to February is peak. June to September brings the southwest monsoon, when the calm side shifts and prices drop.

Has Boracay changed since it reopened?

Yes. After a six-month government closure in 2018 to address over-tourism and pollution, the island reopened with stricter rules — no permanent structures on the beach, no smoking or drinking on the sand, capped visitor numbers and better sewage management. It's cleaner and more orderly than its old reputation suggests.

Is the sunset sail worth it?

Very much — the traditional paraw outrigger sail across the bay at sunset is Boracay's defining experience and consistently the highest-rated thing to do. Book ahead in peak season, as the best slots go fast.
