Things to Do in Santillana del Mar: The Medieval Village & Altamira

Santillana del Mar, Spain · Updated June 2026 · By Richard J.

Santillana del Mar is a perfectly preserved medieval village in Cantabria, famously neither holy, flat nor by the sea despite the name. It's tiny — walkable in under an hour — and best treated as a half-day stop paired with the Altamira museum and the green Cantabrian coast rather than a base. This is our honest shortlist of what's worth your booking time, and what to skip.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you need in Santillana del Mar?

Half a day is plenty for the village itself — the old town walks in under an hour, plus an hour for the Altamira museum next door. Most people pair it with Comillas, Santander or the Picos de Europa to fill a full day.

Can you see the real Altamira cave?

No — the original cave has been closed to general visitors since 2002 to preserve the paintings, with only a tiny lottery-based access scheme. What you visit is the Neocueva, a precise full-scale replica beside the museum that reproduces the famous polychrome ceiling faithfully.

Is Santillana del Mar worth visiting?

Yes, as part of a Cantabria itinerary rather than on its own. The medieval streetscape is among the best preserved in Spain and the Altamira museum is world-class. As a standalone destination it's small; as a stop it's a highlight.

Do you need a car?

Effectively yes. Public transport to Santillana is limited, and the best of the area — Altamira, Comillas, the coast, the Picos — really needs a car. It's about 30 minutes from Santander.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring and early autumn (May, June, September, October) for mild weather and thinner crowds. Visit the village early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday coach groups.
