Things to Do in Kraków: 10 Experiences Worth Booking in 2026

Kraków, Poland · Updated June 2026 · By Richard J.

Kraków is one of the few major European cities whose medieval core survived the war intact, and it shows — the Main Market Square is the largest in medieval Europe and still the heart of the city. Around it sit Wawel Castle, the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, and two of the most significant day trips in Europe: Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. This is our shortlist, with care taken over the heavier history.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Kraków?

Three is the sweet spot. One day for the Old Town and Wawel, one for Auschwitz-Birkenau (which takes most of a day with travel), and one for Kazimierz, Schindler's Factory and the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Two days is possible but rushed.

Do you need to book Auschwitz in advance?

Yes — strongly. Entry is timed and free individual slots are limited and release in advance; in peak season they go fast. An organised tour from Kraków bundles transport and an authorised guide, which is required during busy hours and makes the visit far more comprehensible.

Is the Wieliczka Salt Mine worth it?

Yes. It's a genuine UNESCO World Heritage site — vast underground chambers, chapels and sculptures carved from rock salt over centuries. It's a good lighter counterpoint to Auschwitz and easy to do as a half-day.

Is Kraków expensive?

No — it's one of the best-value major city breaks in Europe. Food, drink, tours and hotels cost well below Western European levels, and the quality is high.

When is the best time to visit Kraków?

Late spring and early autumn (May, June, September) for the best weather-to-crowds balance, or December for the Christmas market. Always book Auschwitz and Wieliczka ahead in summer.
