ETIAS Just Went Live: The 90-Second Version Americans Need
Important Update · 3 min read
The honest read: Americans now need ETIAS to fly to any Schengen country. €7, online, takes minutes. Apply at the official EU portal — etias-euvisa.com is a scam. Valid 3 years. Without it, the airline won't let passengers board. There's no recovery at the gate.
A meaningful number of Americans are going to show up at the airport this summer, get to the gate, and discover they can't fly to Europe.
The EU's new ETIAS system is live. It's not a visa. It's a pre-travel authorization, similar to the US ESTA that foreign tourists need before flying into the US. Most Americans haven't heard of it yet. Most American travel agents haven't started warning their clients yet.
Here's the 90-second version.
What ETIAS actually is
An online travel authorization. Applicants fill out a form, pay €7, wait for approval. Once approved, they can enter Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period — same as before. Valid for 3 years or until the passport expires.
Applies to: France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, all the Nordic countries, plus 20+ others. Basically all of mainland Europe except UK and Ireland.
Does NOT apply to: UK (different system, ETA), Ireland, or any non-Schengen country.
"Without ETIAS, the airline won't let passengers board. Full stop. The plane leaves from the check-in counter."
How to get it (the legitimate way)
- Go to the official EU ETIAS website (travel-europe.europa.eu/etias). Don't use Google ads — the top results are often scam sites charging $80-$120 for the same €7 service.
- Fill out the application: passport details, contact info, travel plans, basic security questions. Takes 10-15 minutes.
- Pay €7 via card. Submit application.
- Wait for approval. Most approvals come within minutes. A small percentage take up to 30 days for additional review.
- Receive approval via email linked to the passport. No physical document needed — border officials check electronically.
⚠️ Watch for scam sites. Multiple lookalike sites charge $80-$120 for "expedited ETIAS processing." These are scams — the EU charges €7, period. Some scam sites do submit the application but pocket the difference; others steal data without filing anything. Always verify the URL is on a .europa.eu domain.
The travel insurance question
ETIAS itself doesn't require travel insurance. But several Schengen countries are tightening enforcement of existing rules that require visitors to have travel medical coverage. Border officials can ask, and increasingly do for visitors flagged for additional review.
For frequent travelers and digital nomads, SafetyWing provides Schengen-compliant coverage on a subscription model that fits unpredictable travel patterns. For one-trip travelers, traditional trip insurance from a credit card or dedicated provider works.

When to apply
Now, basically. Even without a specific trip planned. The 3-year validity means applying today covers any European travel through 2029 (or until the passport expires). The €7 is cheap insurance against the "at the gate and they won't let me board" scenario.
For travelers with summer 2026 trips already booked: do this today. Don't wait until the week before departure.
The bottom line
10 minutes, €7, valid 3 years. There's no reason to skip it.
For anyone with Europe travel plans in the next 3 years — or who might develop them — get the authorization now. The risk-cost ratio is absurd: spend €7 today, or risk a denied boarding at the gate for the next 3 years.
